I think I like this game. I don't have the DLC, but should I wait until I can beat the base game with a couple characters before I purchase it? I can't even beat the first boss yet.

Also, I have a really hard time with the blue slimes... is there a trick to not getting hit by them so much? Sometimes I think I should have been hit, but I'm not, and other times I get hit and I didn't expect it. Even some of the mini-bosses are easier than these fucking blue slimes.

Any other tips?

Any items I should remove from the pool?

I've unlocked some of the stuff, but getting 15 diamonds to unlock the next heart container is very daunting...

Bard (Crypt of the Necrodancer)/fixed beat mode(Cadence of Hyrule).

"But if it just doesnt work for you, or if you already know youre terrible at keeping up with the tempo, then you should know there is another option for you. Pause the game, press R to go to System, and then find Options. Press Gameplay, where you should find something called Fixed-Beat Mode. Turn it on."

Any other tips?
You can put in your own music to jive to while playing. I do believe playing with the DLC adds an additional floor for you to beat the game.
You can bomb crates/barrels open. Alternatively it's best to push them into a spike pit to open them. ANOTHER alternative you need 3 or 4 damage to break them with your weapon.
You CAN blow up shrines for an item.
Use tactical digging to stay in place but lure monsters closer to you in range. For example a skele is ready to move into the square you want to move into and hurt you? DIG and then you attack and skele is gone.
Use the training room to practice against bosses, and use the tutorial to learn how to fight dragons appropriately before coming back here and saying DARGON OP.
An addendum to practicing against bosses, THERE ARE QUICK KILLS to them. I'd recommend figuring them out on your own, but if you don't want to you can easily find it online.
Stronger torches make the aggro range bigger for monsters THIS WILL FUCK YOU ON FLOOR THREE (Lava Ice zone).
The entire game can be beaten with a one damage dagger never getting hit (I've done it), all it takes is just learning how to literally dance with the enemies. There's ways to dance while avoiding and ways to dance while damaging enemies. Once you get to that point it's all a beauty to see unfold at your finger tips.
If you get good at this game Cadence of Hyrule will be MUCH easier. Still fun to play however.

I remember using the bard a bit when I was first starting out just so I could get a better idea on the movement patterns for different enemies. I'm not super good at the game and haven't played in quite a while, but I've beaten it a couple times with that vampire girl. (It looks like her name is Nocturna)

I think she's a part of the dlc, don't know if she comes in the base game. I don't know I have the DLC installed.

I played it on the Switch, which must just come with the DLC prepackaged into it then, because I never had to buy anything extra. Anyway, the cutlass is a really nice weapon if you see it, and it's something she starts with.

A whole new floor, new enemies, new mechanics, a new character and story, and new weapons and items, and new bosses (best boss Notorious D.I.G. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7njY-M4vobw) and remixes for 7 bucks, which you probably can get on sale for 3 bucks later on.

Seems worth it if you play the game a lot and have beaten it.

Beat Zone 1 using the easy mode, and I aaalmooost beat it regularly.

The controls are awkward on PC though, it won't tell me which button I need to press, just says shit like "Up+Down" and so on. I can configure the buttons, sure, but it'd be nice to know which fucking button to press in a pinch.

Anyway around this?

No luck on the controls, but I'm adapting.

Beat Zone 1 legit, but the boss didn't drop any diamonds? WTF I thought the boss was gonna drop at least a few.

Finished with only 2 diamonds, not enough to buy anything.

Is this a glitch?

EDIT: Not a glitch apparently. Only the first time you beat a boss does it drop diamonds. What a load of shit. Why'd they make such a stupid design decision?

Finished Zone 2 with Bard, but Cadence seems impossible. I thought I had these patterns down, but I have a hard time with the 2-1 music, it's just awkward.

Unlocked the 6th Heart Container and a bunch of weapons, too.

You can use a shovel to find diamonds around the map too, in case you haven't discovered that yet. Bosses aren't your only source by any means.

You get a chunk of diamonds the first time you beat a boss, but you're not supposed to be able to grind lower levels for later gear.

You can get 6 diamonds at a time from finishing stage 1. But you can get that by just barely dipping into the second floor of stage 2. If you want better gear, you gotta try harder levels.

The DLC stage 5 is playable from pretty much the beginning IIRC. so if you really want to grind diamonds you can easily get them there. It's not hard to survive a little bit there.

Thanks for the tips guys!

Diamonds haven't been a problem since I got Zone 2 unlocked with Bard.

I don't have the DLC yet, because looking at this page (down at the bottom):
https://steamdb.info/app/554000/

...shows that it goes on sale for 50% off several times a year so I'm gonna wait for the Summer Sale and try to complete everything in Vanilla before then.

Honestly Bard is so much easier but also somewhat less intense.

Starting to get the hang of Zone 2 with Cadence, made it to the 3rd floor a few times.

Current plan is to unlock everything and then use the Janitor to clean up the item pool (karate gi, glass stuff, spell scrolls, I'm looking at you). I tend to like the more "reliable" items. I'd rather have Leather Armor than glass armor, for example.

I double dipped and have the game on my Switch too, the DLC is already part of it.

For some reason the Janitor doesn't seem to let you remove all the lamest items. Like you can only remove so many bad items before he only offers to remove good items. I've never been able to figure out his system

Yea I can't seem to remove the regular torch. I also feel like I used to be able to remove the apple, but not anymore.

Can find literally 0 info on this. Is it possible that it's just bad RNG and you just gotta "re-roll" the Janitor a bazillion times?

That's how it always is, you just keep it in mind. If you play with a controller I think it's configured to use items with your trigger buttons, so bomb is always left trigger for example, next item is right trigger, quick swap weapon is left button and spell is right button.

It gets wonky if you have a reloadable blunderbuss then you have to reload, you have two spells, you have food and you can swap weapons and there's a bunch of options you can do on a turn.

But one of my favorites is the drums, you can just drum to stay in place without worrying about digging

Eating food offers you invincibility for the beat if you ever happen to remember that.

As for what unlocks what, I use allz ones mode after having unlocked everything. I think barrels and crates can also drop diamonds, and walls with diamonds glimmer in the darkness.

It's actually a bug (there is an option to use the default up+down designations or not, but it doesn't work). The developer has known about it for years (looking through the Steam forum) but never fixed it.

I got around it by thinking of my face buttons as 2 on top, 2 on bottom, then left or right and it's not so bad. up-down and left-right I use the triggers for, and I have to remember those.

Still stuck on Zone 2 as Cadence. I'm getting better by just saying "fuck the multiplier" and waiting for skeletons to walk to me. It's not an ideal solution, but it should let me beat the zone eventually.

I'm not getting diamonds nearly as quickly as with Bard, but I'm okay with that. I feel like an hour with Bard and I could unlock everything.

If I get a spear or longsword or bow (unlocked the gun, never got it yet) I'm almost guaranteed to make it to floor 3. The distance really puts the zone 2 monsters away.

The biggest problem is the music is pretty lame in Zone 2. Yes, I know I can change the music, but I don't want to be fucking around with that right now.

It's been a while since I played it, there's a lot of enemy movement pattern memorization to avoid damage. My personal favorite weapons are the uh... onyx? ones or whatever that have damage that scale with your combo, I think I generally liked the broadsword, though the crossbow was pretty OP late game iirc due to its ability to break shields.

Another tip for using items/spells I believe I changed the controls for those to be like Q/E/F/R so you don't have to mess around trying to hit stupid button combos to use them, helped immensely.

Over time once you unlock all of the items you'll be able to figure out what's worth leaving in the pool and what's not worth it, it's the sort of game that just requires a lot of practice. I also wouldn't recommend learning the game with Bard, I think he's the only character that lets you play to your own beat, so you're kind of setting yourself up for frustration if you go to try other characters out later on.

I wanna play Cadence of Hyrule, but Nintendo's (and Sony's) digital purchases are garbage. As soon as Switch 2 comes out my library won't carry over. They already fucked me with my Wii (and PSP, PS3) library, and it won't happen again.

It's supposed to just say the controller button number if you have a controller configured (which I do, Logitech) but it doesn't work and only shows the original combinations.

Yeah you start getting into this feeling that the bard is the norm when he's the outlier. In fact there's a lore reason why the bard is the only one able to ignore the beat.

I'd REALLY recommend NOT playing bard, but it's dependent on how you want to play the game. If you just want to beat the game then play the bard. If you want to get the story, you're gonna have to play as Cadence + 3 other characters to get the full story, and the game won't let you play as bard for the story, you HAVE to play as them. Fortunately what you CAN do to get the full story playing as harder characters is complete them floor by floor you don't have to do an all zones run. So for that last character, Aria, you only have to worry about progressing bit by bit instead of all at once and listening to that sweet FamilyJules metal-rock remix.

If you enjoy the game but think it's too hard to play unless you're bard, Cadence of Hyrule may be up your alley.

Yes I am. I'm using a controller and the controller buttons don't work with that option. I know I could use the keyboard and it would work, and then use Joy2Key on top of everything else but I don't wanna. Again, lots of people have this problem, and the dev has just ignored because (I presume) they can't replicate the problem for them.

Someone on a forum somewhere said it has something to do with the xinput (or non xinput) drivers or some shit like that.

I just used an xbox wired controller, and changed the buttons around. I set right trigger to throw dagger (up+down), it still said up+down but using the trigger still threw the dagger. It seems to work fine with the controller. The face buttons are also arrow keys so you can press like x+a (on xbox controller) to press left and down to lay a bomb. Or alternatively you can set left trigger to be left and down and use that to lay bombs.
