If you play with a controller I think it's configured to use items with your trigger buttons, so bomb is always left trigger for example, next item is right trigger, quick swap weapon is left button and spell is right button. It gets wonky if you have a reloadable blunderbuss then you have to reload, you have two spells, you have food and you can swap weapons and there's a bunch of options you can do on a turn. But one of my favorites is the drums, you can just drum to stay in place without worrying about digging Eating food offers you invincibility for the beat if you ever happen to remember that. As for what unlocks what, I use allz ones mode after having unlocked everything.
