You can get 6 diamonds at a time from finishing stage 1. But you can get that by just barely dipping into the second floor of stage 2. If you want better gear, you gotta try harder levels. The DLC stage 5 is playable from pretty much the beginning IIRC. so if you really want to grind diamonds you can easily get them there. It's not hard to survive a little bit there. --- My sister's dog bit a hole in my Super Mario Land cartridge.
