A lot of shit that seems like common sense or should be the default is not, when it comes to marriage and other family law. Like, paternity tests should be mandatory upon birth before assigning the father, yet it's something that has to be requested (nothing awkward about that!) and paid for as an option, and the default is to just assume the husband/BF is the dad.
