So I been meaning to ask this.... what are maps? I've seen people mention maps before, but I have no idea what they mean lol

Timeworn (leather) maps are a treasure hunt of sorts. You open them, you find the location on the map that has them, you dig for them, you kill some monsters that guard the coffer that you find there. Occasionally in 8-player maps (Zonureskin, Gazelleskin, and whatever Heavensward's 8-man is) a portal will open up after you open the treasure chest and put you in a relatively-easy mini-dungeon where you beat the snot out of up to five waves of things for more loot. It's very profitable, but you have to bear in mind you only get one map a day by gathering, and you can only hold one at a time (which you can get around by throwing one on your retainer, one on your chocobo, one on your other retainer, one in your inventory, and one open ready for digging.)

Or, if you're on a busy world like Mateus, you just sell the maps outright for like 70k a pop. But yes, you have to gather them. I believe the quest to start them is in Wineport, or whatever the other settlement in the map that has Costa del Sol in it is.
