I never got into the figures (because I had almost no money in high school). I either used the cardboard standees included in the box, or I cut up index cards and wrote the names of the mechs on the resulting squares, plus little arrows for facing. So of course several people at the table were like "It only counts if you buy the real figures hurr hurr".

I played using Steiner mechs when I started, but I switched to the St. Ives Compact before that got written out of existence. Good excuse to beat up on House Liao.
