When you subscribe to someone you pay $5/month to be their subscriber. After the month your subscription ends unless you renew it.

If you have Amazon Prime you can link your twitch account to your amazon account and you get 1 free Prime sub available each month. The addition of the Prime subs did a lot for twitch streamers who can get a lot of extra subscribers courtesy of amazon.

Additionally it is now possible to "Gift" a sub to someone else so you pay $5 for 1 month of subscription to someone else.

Ninja lost a significant part of his subscribers because after he set the record he signed a deal with Microsoft to stream exclusively on their new platform "Mixer" which is a platform that didn't last. He's back on twitch now, but the lightning in a bottle he captures in 2018 is gone. His previous record number came from a convergence of several factors not the least of which was the fact that Fortnite was at the peak of it's popularity, and he was the top Fortnite streamer. And the night he sit the number and he had a collab stream with Drake which turned a lot of new eyes his way. That's why until Ludwig's month-long-sub-a-thon no one had even reached HALF the level of concurrent subscribers as Ninja's 2018 mark.
