The idea that companies are trying to sell overpriced hiking equipment to new demographics is possible, but given the spread of groups here, it doesn't seem all that likely in the context of the article, unless it's an advertising thing with the LA Times specifically, which I grant is not out of the question.

And as to the main subject, I wasn't personally aware specifically of an aversion of people of color to the American outdoors, but I don't especially doubt it

Oh, I meant in a more abstract or indirect way. Like, I wouldn't be shocked to find that all these nonprofit advocacy groups are getting at least some funding from hiking retailers who would obviously benefit from more people becoming interested in hiking.
