The only other video game movie I ever heard get mostly positive reviews back then was the first Resident Evil (ironically, also a Paul W. S. Anderson film). To expand upon this, for what it's worth, the original Mortal Kombat is still the 5th best rated movie on that list from Rotten Tomatoes, and #1 from Metacritic. One could argue that MK was literally the peak of video game movies.
