She said that it's hard to sell a network on a show about black women, Latino women, old women, criminals, etc. A pretty, upper-class white women in a fish out of water storyline is what sold it. Oh man I now love Piper after finding out that we're supposed to hate her and/or resent her whiny, spoiled, entitled rich white ass. It melds so perfectly with the drama of the prisoners and their past lives, works really well. While watching this I was thinking "huh, been a while since I actually like the side characters in a show, possibly more than the main character.
