It starts off as a mostly paint-by-numbers magical girl series until Fate shows up halfway into the first season, then the action and violence picks up. The Gundam comparisons really start to take shape in A's (the second season) when the girls' weapons get modified to use magic cartridges as "ammo" and their barrier jackets start to look a lot more Gundam-like. From there, it just gets crazier and crazier.
