First and foremost, the GotM winners... January: PW Ace Attorney - Justice for All February: Final Fantasy VI Advance March: God of War II April: Super Paper Mario May: Odin Sphere June: The Darkness July: Guitar Hero Encore - Rocks the 80s August: Persona 3 September: Halo 3 October: PW Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations November: Super Mario Galaxy December: NIGHTS - Journey to Dreams It was obvious that I couldn't give all 12 of these games 1-3 seeds. The Darkness, a NIGHTS sequel hardly anyone played, and a borderline Guitar Hero expansion pack didn't deserve higher positions than Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and BioShock. Based on its strength of victory, Mario Galaxy was given the overall #1 seed and it proceeded to run with the ball nearly untouched for the most part. Other one seeds did their fair share, including Trials and Tribulations giving Phoenix Wright his first Final Four appearance ever. God of War II did great until the Elite Eight, when #2 seeded Persona 3 barely edged it 14-12. And then there was Halo 3. While 2007 would be a good year for Master Chief in the Character Battle, it wouldn't be a good year for Halo 3 on this board. The massively hyped 360 exclusive got paired up with King of Fighters XI in round 1. The end result? King of Fighters winning the low scoring affair 4-2. Low votals or not, Halo 3 got doubled by a 16 seed. King of Fighters XI joins Starcraft, the Harvard Women's Basketball team, and the UMBC Men's basketball team in the small group of unthinkable moments. Its reward? Scoring 20% on Hotel Dusk in round 2. A few surprises came out of this tournament. #13 seeded Zack and Wiki, an obscure puzzle adventure for the Wii, upset both Rock Band and Odin Sphere before bowing out to Galaxy. Uncharted made its debut as a #12 seed upsetting 80s Guitar Hero and putting up a respectable effort against Super Paper Mario. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare actually put up a damn good run, considering the series was yet to be hated on this board; it disposed of Warhawk and a .hack title before losing only 17-13 to Metroid Prime 3. Another nice surprise was Contra 4, netting a #4 seed in Halo's region and making the Elite Eight, nearly knocking off BioShock but losing by a vote. BioShock lived up to its hype, with its biggest threats being a Contra 4 potential upset, and #3 seeded Portal taking Big Daddy to overtime. Portal looked like a million dollars, despite the 27-23 loss to BioShock. Finally, Persona 3 beat BioShock in the August poll by one vote, maybe two. The two would meet in the semifinals, where BioShock would proceed to nearly triple the JRPG sensation. As someone who played a lot of games in 2007, I firmly believe Mario Galaxy vs BioShock was the ideal match between the top two games of said year. BioShock was my pick for GotY, but losing 31-23 to Mario is nothing to be ashamed of. Like 2006, the 2007 contest had a rough start with low votals. Does Halo 3 lose to King of Fighters XI today? Probably not, but it is what it is. However, the matches starting in round 3 would put this one over '06. Thankfully, the best was yet to come, and we'd have to wait 12 months for shit to get real.
