Favorite runner up of the last ten years?

Due to semi popular demand, a select few curious about the history of these things, and recent opinions that my last tournament was (accurately) the best one I've ever done, I've decided to start this topic. I've done 25 Game of the Year tournaments since January 2006. I will rank them as I go, discussing vital points and thoughts on each one as the series progressed over the last 15 years.

I will list these in the order which I ran them, so therefore the first one discussed will be...

Best Game of 2005
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=136909

Ran: January 2006
Overall top seed: Resident Evil 4
1 seeds: Resident Evil 4, Dragon Quest VIII, Devil May Cry 3, Final Fantasy IV Advance
Final Four: Resident Evil 4, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Devil May Cry 3, Mario Kart DS
Ultimate Loser: Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath
Championship: Resident Evil 4 defeated Devil May Cry 3 9-7

The original format for my GotY tournaments was a bit unorthodox and I wonder how I kept doing it the next several years. For those unfamiliar, I ran 12 polls where people voted for the best game of each month. Game of the Month winners were guaranteed nothing lower than a 3 seed for this tournament, which made for some interesting matches.

January: Resident Evil 4
February: Xenosaga Episode II
March: Devil May Cry 3
April: Jade Empire
May: Fire Emblem - The Sacred Stones
June: Kirby Canvas Curse
July: Killer7
August: Advance Wars - Dual Strike
September: We <3 Katamari
October: Fire Emblem - Path of Radiance
November: Dragon Quest VIII
December: Final Fantasy IV Advance

The runnerups (2nd and 3rd place each month) would get guaranteed spots also, just at lower seeds. The rest was determined in a last minute nomination topic for the scraps. I also remembered picking the #1 seeds based on leverage/impact of their releases, as well as how much they dominated their polls (the last part may be 50% true; this tournament was 15 years ago, mind you).

Anyway, the tournament was certainly some humble beginnings. Some matches didn't even break 10 votes. Devil May Cry 3 and Phoenix Wright's matches were certainly bringing in the bacon and then their one on one match in the Elite Eight tore the house down. I firmly believe if Phoenix Wright had upset Devil May Cry 3, it might have won the whole contest; Ace Attorney was only released recently at this point and Board 8 was ready to make Phoenix the official mascot and spokesperson here.

The only #11 seed not to win in the first round was Tekken 5, losing to X-Men Legends II. Mario & Luigi 2, Guitar Hero, and Indigo Prophecy all won their openers, and only Guitar Hero failed to make round 3. The most successful double-digit seed of course was Phoenix Wright, making it to the Elite Eight as a 10 seed.

Half the field's 1 seeds ended up disappointing, as Dragon Quest VIII lost to Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow in round 3, while Final Fantasy IV Advance suffered a round 3 loss to Mario Kart DS. Some seedings didn't make sense in the long run, and while I stand by DQ8's #1 seed, there really was no excuse for FF4A getting one. Devil May Cry 3 do

Best Game of 2006
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=197393

Ran: January 2007
Overall top seed: Guitar Hero II
1 seeds: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, New Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy XII
Final Four: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, Okami, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Ultimate Loser: Table Tennis
Championship: Okami defeated Kingdom Hearts II 14-12

With the 2005 tournament posting zero Xbox 360 titles, 2006's tournament would guarantee there'd be next gen entries from all three major consoles. The 360 got in Gears of War and Saints Row, the Wii got in Trauma Center: Second Opinion and Excite Truck, and even the 599 US DOLLARS got in Resistance: The Fall of Man. The GotM polls went down like so...

January: Mega Man X Collection
February: Grandia III
March: Kingdom Hearts II
April: Brain Age
May: New Super Mario Bros
June: Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
July: Valkyrie Profile - Lenneth
August: Dead Rising
September: Okami
October: Final Fantasy XII
November: Guitar Hero II
December: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Based on how close some of the monthly results were (February, March, and November really standing out in this one), some 2nd place games really deserved to be ranked higher than games with practically no competition. This allowed Twilight Princess and Elder Scrolls IV to get #2 seeds, and a #3 seed for Gears of War. Fight Night 3 and Grandia III finished neck and neck for February, so both of them got #4 seeds. Little did we know the upsets that were going to rock this tournament...

Right out the gate, New Super Mario Bros failed to live up to its #1 seed, nearly losing to a Ghost Recon game in round 1. Mario would complete his flop in round 2, losing to #8 seed Half-Life: Episode One. Remember Fight Night Round 3 getting a #4 seed? Fight Night got KO'd in round 1 by GTA: Vice City Stories. Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria and Madden NFL 07 would also flop as #4 seeds, losing respectively to Mortal Kombat Armageddon and SMT: Devil Summoner. The last big first round flop was Brain Age proving it didn't deserve a #3 seed losing to Splinter Cell: Double Agent in a low voting match. Low votals were everywhere in the 2006 tournament; Resistance beating Phantasy Star Universe 12-5 was the most voted match in the first round and the 4th most voted match overall.

When round 3 began, we had the following...
1 seeds: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII
2 seeds: Twilight Princess, Oblivion, Okami
3 seeds: Gears of War, Portrait of Ruin
5 seeds: SFA Anthology, FF5 Advance, MGS Portable Ops
8 seed: Half-Life 2 - Episode One
10 seed: Trauma Center - Second Opinion
11 seed: Bully
12 seed: Shadow Hearts - From the New World
14 seed: Splinter Cell - Double Agent

A unique set of games on the lower end. In the end, the contest finally picked up some steam in the Elite Eight, as Guitar Hero II held off Twilight Princess by 2 votes, Kingdom Hearts II doubled Oblivion, and then those two winners combined for 34 votes in the final four match against one another. On the other side of the bracket, Okami finished off a strong run to the finals and knocked off KH2 by two votes in order to put Capcom up 2-0 in these tournaments.

However, if the contest were reran today, I guarantee you 95% of this bracket doesn't happen.

Notable Matches
  • Guitar Hero II vs Twilight Princess - Elite Eight
  • Guitar Hero II vs Kingdom Hearts II - Final Four
  • Kingdom Hearts II vs Okami - Championship

how did magna carta manage to win a match, let alone against civ 4

actually, how did it even make the bracket

also pretty pleasantly surprised shadow hearts from the new world had a semi-respectable run. would not have expected it to get votes over either wild arms 4 or grandia 3, let alone put up an acceptable score on kh2

Twilight Princess losing to Guitar Hero II is such an indicator of the era lol. Weirdly for as wild as that bracket is Okami > KH2 seems like a final that could still happen today.

Final Fantasy XII 4-6 Final Fantasy V Advance

Best Game of 2007
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=259186

Ran: January 2008
Overall top seed: Super Mario Galaxy
1 seeds: Super Mario Galaxy, Phoenix Wright AA: Trials and Tribulations, Halo 3, God of War II
Final Four: Super Mario Galaxy, Phoenix Wright AA: T&T, BioShock, Persona 3
Ultimate Loser: Dragon Quest Monsters - Joker
Championship: Super Mario Galaxy defeated BioShock 31-23

2007 was the first full year in the new generation (and second full year for the 360) and there were plenty of strong releases throughout the 12 months. First and foremost, the GotM winners...

January: PW Ace Attorney - Justice for All
February: Final Fantasy VI Advance
March: God of War II
April: Super Paper Mario
May: Odin Sphere
June: The Darkness
July: Guitar Hero Encore - Rocks the 80s
August: Persona 3
September: Halo 3
October: PW Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations
November: Super Mario Galaxy
December: NIGHTS - Journey to Dreams

It was obvious that I couldn't give all 12 of these games 1-3 seeds. The Darkness, a NIGHTS sequel hardly anyone played, and a borderline Guitar Hero expansion pack didn't deserve higher positions than Guitar Hero III, Assassin's Creed, and BioShock. Based on its strength of victory, Mario Galaxy was given the overall #1 seed and it proceeded to run with the ball nearly untouched for the most part. Other one seeds did their fair share, including Trials and Tribulations giving Phoenix Wright his first Final Four appearance ever. God of War II did great until the Elite Eight, when #2 seeded Persona 3 barely edged it 14-12.

And then there was Halo 3. While 2007 would be a good year for Master Chief in the Character Battle, it wouldn't be a good year for Halo 3 on this board. The massively hyped 360 exclusive got paired up with King of Fighters XI in round 1. The end result? King of Fighters winning the low scoring affair 4-2. Low votals or not, Halo 3 got doubled by a 16 seed. King of Fighters XI joins Starcraft, the Harvard Women's Basketball team, and the UMBC Men's basketball team in the small group of unthinkable moments. Its reward? Scoring 20% on Hotel Dusk in round 2.

A few surprises came out of this tournament. #13 seeded Zack and Wiki, an obscure puzzle adventure for the Wii, upset both Rock Band and Odin Sphere before bowing out to Galaxy. Uncharted made its debut as a #12 seed upsetting 80s Guitar Hero and putting up a respectable effort against Super Paper Mario. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare actually put up a damn good run, considering the series was yet to be hated on this board; it disposed of Warhawk and a .hack title before losing only 17-13 to Metroid Prime 3.

Another nice surprise was Contra 4, netting a #4 seed in Halo's region and making the Elite Eight, nearly knocking off BioShock but losing by a vote. BioShock lived up to its hype, with its biggest threats being a Contra 4 potential upset, and #3 seeded Portal taking Big Daddy to overtime. Portal looked like a million dollars, despite the 27-23 loss to BioShock.

Finally, Persona 3 beat BioShock in the August poll by one vote, maybe two. The two would meet in the semifinals, where BioShock would proceed to nearly triple the JRPG sensation. As someone who played a lot of games in 2007, I firmly believe Mario Galaxy vs BioShock was the ideal match between the top two games of said year. BioShock was my pick for GotY, but losing 31-23 to Mario is nothing to be ashamed of.

Like 2006, the 2007 contest had a rough start with low votals. Does Halo 3 lose to King of Fighters XI today? Probably not, but it is what it is. However, the matches starting in round 3 would put this one over '06.

Thankfully, the best was yet to come, and we'd have to wait 12 months for shit to get real.

The PSP FFT beating FFVI Advance then losing to Contra 4 is a weird set of matches. Didn't know Contra 4 was that big here. I think Bioshock is probably weaker these days, but I could see Portal v Bioshock and Mario Galaxy v T&T still being close.

FFVII is the only one I haven't actually played, but I've never been a fan of the series to begin with. This year is also one of the only years where I haven't significantly preferred the runner up to the winner.

Best Game of 2008
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=303978

Ran: January 2009
Overall top seed: Fallout 3
1 seeds: Fallout 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metal Gear Solid 4, The World Ends With You
Final Four: Fallout 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Metal Gear Solid 4, Persona 4
Ultimate Loser: Guitar Hero - World Tour
Championship: Persona 4 defeated Super Smash Bros. Brawl 38-33

And here's what I considered to be the first truly successful tournament. Men lie, women lie, numbers don't.

Game of the Month winners
January: Advance Wars - Days of Ruin
February:
March: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
April: The World Ends With You
May: Boom Blox
June: Metal Gear Solid 4
July: Soulcalibur IV
August: Braid
September: Rock Band 2
October: Fallout 3
November: Chrono Trigger
December: Persona 4

Time for a slight regret paragraph. Had I known what direction I was going in with these tournaments, Chrono Trigger never would have been in this bracket. I had no idea or thought that I'd be doing retroactive tournaments when I was doing the 2008 polls and contest, and allowed a 13 year old port to be eligible for entry. Considering the next two tournaments I did after this one, it's a mistake I (hopefully) didn't make a second time.

Seedings were mostly reasonable, based on poll results and strength of months. Fallout 3 came out in a stacked month, so its top seed was justified. Brawl had all the hype in the world, as did MGS4. TWEWY won a close battle with Grand Theft Auto IV, so it got the last #1 seed while GTA still got a respectable #2 in MGS4's division. Persona 4 and Boom Blox got #4 and #5 seeds, considering they came out in months with little to no competition. Boom Blox crashed hard in the first round getting upset by Devil May Cry 4.

But if you wanna look at scores, look no further than the first damn match. Fallout 3 storms out the gate immediately, scoring the biggest shutout in tournament history, beating a One Piece game no one played 26-0. We'll never see a score like that ever again. We watched Crisis Core get upset by World of Goo, and later watch Dragon Quest IV stun Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2. Gears of War 2 got a nice upset win over Disgaea 3 also. Ninja Gaiden II nearly shut out Wii Fit in the first round. The lowest scoring match in round 1 was Little Big Planet's 7-3 win over Animal Crossing: City Folk. This was the tournament that put this B8 series on the map. Also for first-time-ever moments, 2008 introduced the sudden death match; if any match in the first two rounds is still tied at the end of OT, they enter Sudden Death, where the first to five votes is the winner. The first sudden death winner was Dead Space, winning 5-3 in sudden death over Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.

In later rounds, we saw Fallout 3 have close affairs with Apollo Justice, Soulcalibur, and Professor Layton. We watched Brawl dispose of all its opponents before having the fight of a lifetime with #3 seed Left 4 Dead, requiring overtime in a match that combined for 117 votes to put away the zombie FPS. Metal Gear Solid 4 completed one of the easiest runs to the Final Four, outscoring its four opponents 68-18, including a 17-4 humbling over #2 seed GTA4. Finally, TWEWY was the only #1 seed to not live up to expectations, losing 25-20 in round 3 to Persona 4.

The last three matches were all something else. First was Fallout 3 vs Brawl, which ended in a 30-24 victory in favor of Smash. Next up was MGS4 vs Persona 4; after mowing down its entire region, Old Snake finally had a viable opponent in Yu Narukami and friends. The end result? Persona 4 knocking off its second #1 seed with a 35-37 upset. The stage was set for Brawl vs Persona 4. The Smash fanbase was heavily divided between pro Brawl and anti Brawl, and Persona 4's cult following was only beginning. In a result that I admittedly didn't see coming at the time, Persona 4 took the lead in the beginning and never lost it, winning 2008's tournament with a 38-33 final.

As stated earlier, this was when the scales tipped in favor of these tournaments on Board 8, though again not without its flaws. The anticipation of waiting another 12 months to determine 2009's best game was something, but thanks to an idea I had, Board 8 didn't have to wait long for another tournament...

Best Game of 2000
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=308442

Ran: February 2009
Overall top seed: Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
1 seeds: Pokemon GSC, Majora's Mask, Final Fantasy IX, Skies of Arcadia
Final Four: Pokemon GSC, Majora's Mask, Final Fantasy IX, Marvel vs Capcom 2
Ultimate Loser: Thief II - The Metal Age
Championship: Pokemon GSC defeated Final Fantasy IX 29-26

SURPRISE! With the 2000s slowly coming to an end, I decided to start up another nomination topic just weeks after the 2008 tournament ended. 2000 was stacked with an excellent array of releases; it was the final great year the PS1 had, the N64 and Dreamcast were going strong, and the PlayStation 2 made its huge debut, even if the games weren't the most stellar that year. I ditched the Monthly polls for the retroactive tournaments and had users submit up to 10 favorite games released in North America that year. The #1 seeds were all mostly expected, though you could switch Skies of Arcadia with either Perfect Dark or Chrono Cross and no one would have noticed.

Apparently that would be the case for Arcadia, being the only #1 seed to miss the Elite Eight after a loss to Valkyrie Profile. The upsets were a minimum this time around; we did see #11 seed Parasite Eve II knock off #6 seed Persona 2 in overtime, and Diablo II barely survive against #13 seed Wild Arms 2. However, the best upset run of 2000 was #13 seed Escape from Monkey Island getting solid wins over Mario Party 2 and Tekken Tag Tournament (PlayStation 2's only entry). Monkey Island would get doubled by #1 seed Majora's Mask in round 3, but we all expected worse.

Other things we saw in 2000 included the following...
1) A record high three wrestling games in the field of 64. SmackDown and SmackDown 2 were quickly disposed of in round 1, but #3 seed No Mercy made it to round 3 and only lost to Perfect Dark by two votes. To this day, No Mercy's third round appearance is the most successful for any wrestling title.
2) Chances are if you were a PlayStation RPG in 2000, you were in this bracket. FF9, Vagrant Story, Wild Arms 2, Legend of Mana, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, Rhapsody, Legend of Dragoon, Persona 2, Parasite Eve II, Alundra 2, Eternal Blue Complete, and Breath of Fire IV were all in this for a grand total of 13 PS1 RPGs (14 if you count Harvest Moon)
3) The Dreamcast had a few representatives. Notable games included Skies of Arcadia, Third Strike, and Code Veronica.

We know Skies of Arcadia ended up being the worst #1 seed, but the best? It was almost Final Fantasy IX, which had pasted its first three opponents with a combined score of 60-12. Kirby 64 gave FF9 a scare, and by that, I mean it avoided a doubling but still lost 18-10. Pokemon GSC was no slouch either, getting 25-2, 23-8, and 17-8 wins over a Monster Rancher Card game, Ogre Battle 64, and Diablo II; finally, it dunks hard on Perfect Dark 21-5 for a Final Four spot. Majora's Mask looked damn good as a #1 seed too, getting blowout wins over Space Channel 5 and Baldur's Gate II, before doubling Monkey Island and getting a convincing non-doubling win over Vagrant Story. Arcadia's region would be won by #3 seed Marvel vs Capcom 2, after it upset Chrono Cross and beat Valkyrie Profile by one vote.

The Final Four would feature Pokemon GSC's first true challenge, and Majora's Mask took all 251 Pokemon to the limit. In the end, it wasn't meant to be for Link, as his first Final Four appearance ends in a 19-15 loss. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy IX made easy work out of MvC2 24-14. The showdown between FF9 and Pokemon was close from start to finish, but if I recall correctly, Pokemon led the entire 24 hours, giving Gold/Silver/Crystal (considered by many to be the best generation) the 2000 Championship by three votes over Final Fantasy IX.

With the loss, Square falls to 0-2 in the finals, while Nintendo goes to 2-1. The 2000 tournament was fun from what I remember, not only because of the voter turnout, but also because 2000 was one of my favorite years for gaming. Then again, that might just be the nostalgia talking.

That being said, this was early 2009 and I had nothing major on the agenda besides stressful retail, job hunting, and living in a single bedroom apartment. The board didn't have to wait long at all for the next retroactive battle...

Best Game of 2001
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=315879

Ran: March 2009
Overall top seed: Final Fantasy X
1 seeds: FFX, Super Smash Bros Melee, Metal Gear Solid 2, Halo
Final Four: FFX, SSB Melee, MGS2, Silent Hill 2
Ultimate Loser: Diablo II - Lord of Destruction
Championship: Super Smash Bros Melee defeated Final Fantasy X 48-43

Not long after 2000's tournament ended, I opened up nominations for the 2001 tournament. Considered to be a huge year in gaming, 2001 was PlayStation 2's first full-fledged year in the new generation, and we also had the Gamecube, Game Boy Advance, and Xbox make their debuts, while the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Game Boy Color, and Dreamcast were quietly on their way out. Despite that last statement I just mentioned, all four systems mentioned still got at least one game in...

No big upsets this time around in the opening round of the tournament; the lowest seed to win in round 1 was #11 seed Klonoa 2, knocking off Mario Party 3 by a couple votes. Only two matches went to overtime; Luigi's Mansion with a 17-16 win over Rogue Squadron II and ICO's crazy Sudden Death victory over Dark Cloud in the second round. Otherwise, it was mostly par for the course.

The most impressive #1 seed when it was all said and done was a tossup between Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2. FFX outscored Tennis 2K2, Wario Land 4, and Oracle of Ages 64-16, before having a (slightly) closer bout with Golden Sun, winning 40-28. Metal Gear Solid outscored its first two opponents by an alarming 42-2 (Syphon Filter 3 and SSX Tricky). Snake delivered a 22-10 beatdown to Pikmin, before escaping by the skin of his teeth in a 31-27 win over Paper Mario. Finally, Super Smash Bros. Melee lived up to its following on Board 8, administering beatdowns to a GBA Klonoa and Civilization III, before doubling Shadow Hearts and a respectable 35-23 finish over Devil May Cry.

And then there was Halo. Sound familiar yet? With the way this board was toward Halo, I wouldn't have been surprised if Magi Nation upset it. Halo even got an impressive 17-5 win over Red Faction, another science-fiction FPS. Then it ran into a Pyramid Head-sized brick wall and Silent Hill 2 proceeded to embarrass the #1 seed 21-10. Halo wasn't the only top seed to underperform in its region either; Grand Theft Auto III was the only 2 seed to miss the Elite Eight, getting easily beaten by Conker's Bad Fur Day 17-11. Silent Hill 2 disposed of the foul mouthed squirrel 14-9 for the last final four spot.

In the final four, neither match was truly that close. Melee took out Metal Gear Solid 2 33-25, while Final Fantasy X made easy work out of Silent Hill 2 35-22. A lot of this sounds familiar, doesn't it?

A Final Fantasy game mowing down its competition and getting an underseeded game in the semifinals? A Nintendo game having to prove its worth against a highly touted 1 seed? A meeting between Nintendo and Square in the Finals? Yep, 2001's tournament would end the same way 2000 did, only by 5 votes instead of 3. Two months after Brawl failed to get the job done, its predecessor seals the deal with the 2001 championship.

2001's retroactive tournament would pretty much be on par with 2000's, only with less compelling matches. Nevertheless, this would be the last tournament for 9 months, though my intentions of completing the decade were still there.

I'm enjoying these write-ups! It really is hilarious how FF continually dominates everything until the final. Sonic Adventure 2 got unlucky with bracket placement :( Silent Hill 2 deserved its deep run though.

A shame that neither Shenmue game got out of Round 1, too. And really odd that Spyro 3 went out in round 1 (albeit narrowly) given Spyro 2's run.

Best Game of 2009
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=346032

Ran: January 2010
Overall top seed: Uncharted 2 - Among Thieves
1 seeds: Uncharted 2, Dragon Age, Arkham Asylum, Resident Evil 5
Final Four: See above
Ultimate Loser: Killzone 2
Championship: Uncharted 2 defeated Arkham Asylum 28-22

2009's tournament would be a surprise for many reasons, but let's start with the basics. Since it wasn't retroactive, here's what I remember!

January: Skate 2
February: Street Fighter IV
March: Resident Evil 5
April: Excitebots
May: inFamous
June: SMT - Devil Survivor
July: Blazblue - Calamity Trigger
August: Batman - Arkham Asylum
September: Mario and Luigi - Bowser's Inside Story
October: Uncharted 2 - Among Thieves
November: Dragon Age - Origins
December: Legend of Zelda - Spirit Tracks

Obviously January and April were dead ass months, and with lack of competition, I couldn't give either one a justifiably higher seed than #7. Uncharted and Dragon Age won theirs in highly competitive months, so their top seeds were justified and sealed in. Arkham Asylum was a beast of a game so it got in. Resident Evil 5 was just the last highly hyped winner standing to get the last spot.

The first thing you'll notice? This was the first tournament where all four top seeds made the semifinals. Most of them didn't break a sweat either. After being a #12 seed in 2007, Uncharted's sequel tore through its first three opponents, beating Patapon 2, Dissidia, and Spirit Tracks 49-15 combined; it finally broke a sweat against #3 seed Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box before winning by a mere 4 votes. Layton and his apprentice had a huge fight in round 3, knocking off Mario and Luigi in double overtime 29-28.

Batman gave no fucks getting to the final four, beating Wolverine, some UFC fighters, and a horde of zombies by a combined score of 51-10; in the Elite Eight, the Dark Knight puts an end to Ezio's impressive run with a 23-12 victory. The most impressive thing in that region? Assassin's Creed II murdering inFamous 16-2 and practically cementing House of the Dead: Overkill last place in the X-Stats (who lost to inFamous 20-3).

Dragon Age looked impressive in its region, beating Henry Hatsworth and Fat Princess with ease, before getting a respectable 13-8 win against Demon's Souls. Demon's Souls looked like a better choice for a #2 seed, as the actual #2 seed Street Fighter IV made it to Dragon Age only to lose 24-10. Finally, we have Resident Evil 5, the #1 seed that actually broke a sweat. Convincing wins over Klonoa and Dragon Quest V weren't enough; RE5 soon only won 13-10 over Punch-Out and then needed double overtime to put away Borderlands in the Elite Eight, a final score of 54-49 after three days. Chris Redfield and Sheva's reward for surviving that region? The Goddamned Batman, who already posted 80% on a zombie-killing game earlier in the tournament.

The upsets were few and far between and only from #11 seeds, but they were pretty nice to see. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars upset #6 seed Brutal Legend in round 1, while Madworld stunned Halo 3: ODST and Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. Finally, the upset that almost happened but wasn't meant to be was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories losing by a single vote to #5 seed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the actual GameFAQs' GOTY winner for 2009. This tournament is notable for being the final time Call of Duty had a respectable seed, and the final time Call of Duty has won a match in any of these.

As I continue, take a close look at the Final Four. Not only are they all #1 seeds, but for the first time in tournament history, not a single Nintendo system was represented. I'll look as I continue doing these writeups, but I don't think that ever happens again. Nathan Drake holds his own against the highly acclaimed Dragon Age, winning 25-21; little did we know at the time it would be the final victory for Dragon Age in tournament history, but that's a story for another day. Batman dunked on Resident Evil 5 by a final score of 22-7 to earn a shot at Nathan Drake. In one of my favorite championship matches between what I considered to be the best two games of 2009, Uncharted pulled through, giving the PS3 it's first championship in a close match with Arkham Asylum.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUXya6BbM5A

It's necessary when talking about the Uncharted series. Sure, Uncharted's success in these contests doesn't equal success in the actual GameFAQs contests, but I compare Uncharted to Gonzaga; they both began as the scrappy underdogs before developing into powerhouses for years to come. Rest assured, this won't be the last time you hear me talk about Uncharted's deep run into a tournament.

The biggest surprise? Kingdom Hearts 358/2 winning a match, even if it was against Star Ocean 4.

After further thinking over the past few years' worth of tournaments, I can confirm there's only one other year where a Final Four doesn't have any games exclusive to a Nintendo system. It'll get brought up when I get to said year.

RE5 is a good game! It's definitely a better division winner there than NSMB Wii would've been. And how the heck did Prof Layton do so well? Didn't think it was that great.

Good game, bad Resident Evil game IMO. Forced co-op can go kick rocks. Borderlands and Punch-Out were better than both 1 and 2 seeds in that region

Best Game of 2002
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=350000

Ran: February 2010
Overall top seed: Metroid Prime
1 seeds: Metroid Prime, GTA Vice City, Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario Sunshine
Final Four: See above
Ultimate Loser: Battlefield 1942
Championship: Metroid Prime defeated Kingdom Hearts 78-63 in overtime

With 2009 behind us and a good 11 months left in 2010, I figured what better time then that moment to start filling the remaining void in the decade. Next up was 2002, where the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Dreamcast were officially out the door and we were fully fledged in the latest era of gaming. Retroactive tournaments went back to top 10 nominations, and Metroid Prime led the pack to get the overall seed.

As you can tell, 2002 would join 2009 to get all the top seeds to the Final Four, and they mostly did it in confident fashion. Metroid Prime looked the strongest, winning against a Monster Rancher game, Onimusha 2, Sonic Advance, and Wild Arms 3 all with ease. Next in strength was Kingdom Hearts, pasting Serious Sam and Gitaroo Man, before putting just barely 60% on Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City made it to the semifinals, but not before being unable to double TimeSplitters 2 or Tactics Ogre, before barely escaping Sonic Adventure 2 Battle by 2 votes. Mario Sunshine made easy work out of Sega Soccer Slam before doubling Fatal Frame, barely not doubling Harmony of Dissonance, and then having a closer than expected match with #6 seed Jet Set Radio Future in the Elite Eight.

Wait, did I say a #6 seed in the Elite Eight? When it was all said and done, the only #2 seed to meet its #1 seed counterpart was Ratchet and Clank in KH's region. REmake was upset by Jet Set Radio Future in round 3, Morrowind lost to #3 seed Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, and Eternal Darkness lost by a single vote in overtime to #7 seed Wild Arms 3 in the second round. The most impressive Cinderella run this time around was Sonic Advance, a #12 seed, knocking off Star Fox Adventures and Warcraft III before bowing out to Metroid Prime, and we got to see #11 seed Grandia Xtreme win against Contra: Shattered Soldier. The only other potential upset we nearly saw was Burnout 2 lose by a single vote to Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance.

For how good the 1 seeds were, the semifinals were clear as day on who was going to meet in the finals. Metroid Prime disposed of Vice City 35-20, while Kingdom Hearts put up 66% on Mario Sunshine with an impressive 28-14 victory. By many people's standards, including my own, 2002's top two games made the finals. Prime and KH were close for the entire first day, and after double checking the votes and tallying up the numbers, we had our first ever tie in the championship after 24 hours, forcing an overtime. And in overtime, Metroid Prime decided it was done playing. The troops came in to support Samus in full fashion, and Kingdom Hearts didn't stand a chance, causing Square to fall to 0-4 in the finals after losing 78-63, a total that is still the highest combined amount of votes to this day.

The 02 tournament has a few things that wouldn't happen today. I still think Prime repeats if I posted the same bracket starting tomorrow, but I also think the following goes down...
1) Kingdom Hearts wins, but not without a legit fight from Ratchet and Clank
2) Sonic Adventure 2 might beat Vice City. The GTA series has soured for the most part on B8
3) REmake wins its region, barring any craziness from Mario Sunshine.

Still, no genuine time to sit on those results, I was on a mission to get shit done, and it wouldn't be long before the next tournament was underway...

Best Game of 2003
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=356935

Ran: March 2010
Overall top seed: The Legend of Zelda - The Wind Waker
1 seeds: Wind Waker, Pokemon RSE, Star Wars: KOTOR, Viewtiful Joe
Final Four: Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Disgaea, KOTOR, Beyond Good and Evil
Ultimate Loser: .hack//Outbreak Part 3
Championship: Prince of Persia defeated Knights of the Old Republic 18-13

The GameCube finally got its perennial Zelda title that year and it won the overall seed for 2003. It wouldn't be long, however, before things started getting awry in the bracket.

Slight correction from my 2009 writeup first off: The original Call of Duty won as an #8 seed here, and THAT would be CoD's final win to date. Anyway, the top seeds played like disappointments for the most part. Let's discuss the one that did make the semifinals first. KOTOR was a GotY across many sources in 2003 and for good reason: it was arguably the first Star Wars game that was a masterpiece, and it was an RPG? So many players were down for that. KOTOR's only close match in its region was an 11-8 win over Soulcalibur II in round 3. Otherwise, it made laughing stocks out of Tony Hawk's Underground, SSX 3, and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow.

And now for the rest of the #1 seeds. Pokemon RSE failed to live up to its tournament-winning predecessor, losing in round 3 to a #5 seeded Jak II. Jak and Daxter peaked at the Elite Eight that year, losing a respective 12-9 to #3 seeded Disgaea; if I had actually ran this contest in 2003, Disgaea might have won the whole damn thing based on how much it was loved back then. Viewtiful Joe barely snatched the last #1 seed from Beyond Good and Evil, and it showed as Jade and crew edged Joe by a single vote in the Elite Eight to steal the last final four spot. Finally, The Wind Waker became the first overall top seed to miss the semifinals, losing 14-10 to #3 seeded Prince of Persia.

Yep, that's right; Wind Waker didn't even get the chance to play #2 seeded Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando; the highly praised sequel was stunned by #7 seed Dark Cloud 2 in the second round (which also would have been seeded higher if this contest ran six years earlier). No crazy upsets in the first round, as the lowest seed to advance was a #10, but at the very least, Jak and Dark Cloud's sequels made some noise for at least a round or two. Also on a very rare note, Madden NFL 2004 got a rare win for a sports game, beating True Crime by a single vote before getting shut down by Viewtiful Joe in round 2.

So for the second time in tournament history, none of the games involved were a Nintendo exclusive; sure, the Prince and Jade could both be found on the Gamecube, but those games were multiplatform. Knights of the Old Republic barely got by Beyond Good and Evil 13-11, while Prince of Persia scored a close 24-18 win over Disgaea. Finally, the Prince built up a small lead over Star Wars and kept it long enough to secure a slightly lower total than usual win.

2003 stands out for quite a few reasons, most notably the fact that a huge Gamecube exclusive (a Zelda one at that) gets beaten by Prince of Persia. On that note, I'll say two things:
1) I don't think that happens today
2) I'm glad I didn't run it today. Sands of Time, while not my 2003 GotY, is a damn fine title

Best Game of 2004
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=362344

Ran: May 2010
Overall top seed: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater
1 seeds: MGS3, Tales of Symphonia, Half-Life 2, Halo 2
Final Four: MGS3, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, Half-Life 2, Ninja Gaiden
Ultimate Loser: James Bond 007 - Everything or Nothing
Championship: Metal Gear Solid 3 defeated Half-Life 2 18-16

So... May 2010 wasn't the first time I tried a 2004 tournament. Shortly after the 2005 tournament finished, I remember having a 2004 nominating topic and a bracket set up. The matches fell victim to the purge monster and I never brought it up again. Once these tournaments began picking up steam, I finally got to 2004 as the last bracket to finish the 2000s. On top of that, once the 2004 tournament officially started (this one, not the purged one), I had to take a week hiatus due to a death in the family. If it wasn't one thing, it was something else; upon returning from travel, the tournament could finally commence without interruption.

Naked Snake and Gordon Freeman mowed down their opponents en route to the Final Four. Metal Gear Solid 3 smashed NFS Underground 2 22-1, took out Jak 3 20-8, disposed of Sly 2 17-7, and Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal a commanding 24-9. It wasn't until I typed all that just now when I realized Metal Gear Solid 3 really did beat the brakes off the PlayStation 2's three platforming mascots. On the other side of the bracket, Half-Life 2 destroys a baseball game 16-2, Red Dead Revolver 19-6, Viewtiful Joe 2 16-3, and then barely missed doubling Metroid Zero Mission 15-8. These were your top two seeds and not much explanation was needed.

Meanwhile, there wasn't just one disappointing one seed, there were two. First being Halo 2, living up to all the disappointing expectations of the series when it lost by 3 votes to #5 seed Pikmin 2 in the third round. The other #1 seed, Tales of Symphonia, made it to round 3 before losing in overtime 34-30 to #4 seed Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Shadow Hearts 2 then fell victim to Paper Mario 2 for the third spot in the semifinals, and then the final spot went to Ninja Gaiden as it barely escapes Pikmin 2 by two votes.

The only double digit seed to win a match here was Sonic Heroes at #10. The closest potential upset we nearly witnessed in round 1 was #5 seed Star Ocean 3 beating #12 seed Baten Kaitos by 2 votes. We saw 2003 finalists get sequels that were pegged down in seedings; 2003 GotY Prince of Persia had Warrior Within, now a #7 seed that lost to San Andreas in round 2. The runner up, KOTOR, had KOTOR 2 be a #6 seed and lose easily to Katamari Damacy in round 2. One match was even The Twin Snakes vs Super Mario 64 DS in a battle of unnecessary remakes, with Twin Snakes winning 11-8. Finally, San Andreas falls short in round 3 losing to Ratchet and Clank 3.

The final four went as expected, though not without a fight from Paper Mario. Snake Eater escaped the Thousand Year Door with a final score of 20-17, while Half-Life 2 easily disposed of Ninja Gaiden 17-8. The finals were set and I expected Half-Life 2 to run away with it, and it did for awhile. I remember HL2 getting a lead in the beginning, but blew it in the final 8-10 votes as Metal Gear Solid 3 finally wins a championship for the series.

2004's tournament ended the 2000s decade, and it would be awhile before I even thought about going backwards into the 90s. When the tournament ended, it was the end of May 2010 and I didn't have to worry about a GOTY tournament for the next 7 months when we'd kick off the new decade.

Best Game of 2010
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=384016

Ran: January 2011
Overall top seed: Super Mario Galaxy 2
1 seeds: Galaxy 2, Mass Effect 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Final Fantasy XIII
Final Four: See above
Ultimate Loser: Vanquish =(
Championship: Super Mario Galaxy 2 defeated Mass Effect 2 24-20

With retroactives done for the time being, we started with the new decade! Of course this means I brought back the polls, with the following winners...

January: Mass Effect 2
February: Ace Attorney Investigations - Miles Edgeworth
March: Final Fantasy XIII
April: Nier
May: Super Mario Galaxy 2
June: Metal Gear Solid - Peace Walker
July: Dragon Quest IX
August: Metroid - Other M
September: Civilization V
October: Kirby's Epic Yarn
November: Donkey Kong Country Returns
December: World of Warcraft - Cataclysm

Man... at least two of these results didn't age well. December's releases were so barren that only one game could be voted on that month and the WoW expansion wins the useless poll. Mario Galaxy 2 was far and away the most impressive winner, even in a month that featured Red Dead Redemption. Final Fantasy XIII barely edged God of War III for March, and finally, DKC Returns wins a busy November month and Mass Effect 2 had a good following behind it.

It didn't take long for one GotM winner to shit the bed as Cataclysm drops hard to VVVVVV by an astounding score of 22-5. The next round? Basically went like this...

*upsets a Blizzard game in round 1*
VVVVVV: "I'll fuckin' do it again."

...and do it again the game did, upsetting StarCraft II 14-10 (and StarCraft II was shitting the bed as a #4 seed anyway, barely beating a Need for Speed game 14-13 in round 1). VVVVVV respectfully bowed out to Donkey and Diddy, losing 25-14 to the Wii platforming sensation. The only other major upset in round 1 was #13 seed Valkyria Chronicles II, a PSP exclusive, beating Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, and then nearly did the same to Mega Man 10. Dragon Quest IX almost became the first #2 seed to lose in the opening round when it escaped by two votes against Enslaved: Journey to the West. We'd have to wait 9 more years for a #15 seed upset.

Most of the 1 seeds did their thing as usual. Mario Galaxy stomped Sonic 4, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and Professor Layton before having a close match with Nier in the Elite Eight; take note of Nier's 21-15 loss, as it'll get discussed in the semifinals. Mass Effect 2 looked damn good as well, posting up Split Second and a 3D Castlevania before respectfully beating MGS: Peace Walker and holding God of War III to 11 votes in the Elite Eight. Donkey Kong Country Returns did fairly well, dominating against Recettear, Sin and Punishment 2, and VVVVVV before having a fairly close bout with #6 seeded Heavy Rain in the Elite Eight.

Wait, #6 seeded Heavy Rain?! David Cage's latest interactive adventure had close encounters with Limbo and Civilization V, so after those wins, it was expected to lose hard to Red Dead Redemption, who had just made easy work out of BlazBlue and BioShock 2. Nope; Quantic Dream nets its first Elite Eight spot ever with a 15-13 upset; however, it wasn't meant to be any more than that as DKCR beats it 19-15.

So that leaves Final Fantasy XIII's region. The first three matches said it all...
1) Barely doubled a #16 seeded Final Fantasy spinoff game for DS
2) Beat #9 seeded Alan Wake 11-9
3) Beat #5 seeded Mega Man 10 20-14

...and FF13 was definitely not #1 seed material. It ran into Kirby's Epic Yarn in the Elite Eight and barely escaped with a heartbreaking score of 23-22, advancing to the Final Four. Lightning's reward? Super Mario Galaxy 2. Ouch. First and foremost, Mass Effect 2 made easy work out of DKCR in the final four, winning 29-19. Now for the other game...

...obviously I can't look at detailed results, but I'm 95% positive Mario Galaxy 2 scored the first 15 votes at minimum before Final Fantasy XIII got on the scoreboard. It was bad. Real bad. When the 24 hours ended, the biggest blowout in Final Four history was recorded, with Mario winning 40-12. Remember that 21-15 score that Galaxy 2 did over Nier? This means the following games from Mario's own region could have possibly beaten FF13 in a one on one setting: Nier, Just Cause 2, Dragon Quest IX, and Enslaved for sure. Hell, maybe even Metroid Other M might have had a shot at it. Finally, the blowout also confirmed last place in the X-Stats. Final Fantasy XIII beat Alan Wake 11-9 in round 2. Before that, Alan Wake demolished Fable III in the first round 19-3. We might antivote Halo to death in these contests, but at least they've won matches; Fable never made the 2004 tournament, Fable II lost to Lost Odyssey in 2008, and then Fable III gets dead last in this year's X-Stats.

The championship was close, but the lead never changed after the first few votes, as Super Mario Galaxy 2 nets the title 24-20, much to the dismay of various users who expressed their disappointment (and myself who expressed it silently >_>). In the end, it was Mario Galaxy's 2nd championship in four years in a fairly poppin' tournament.

And at the very least when it was all said and done, I didn't have to worry about running anything for 11 months except for the NFL Pick'em League in Fall. 2011 would have some generation defining titles, and a little controversy to go with it near the end.

WRITER'S NOTE: At the time of said contest, I didn't allow in Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver or Super Street Fighter IV, arguably one small regret. At the time I was strict on re-releases and such, and had I ran those contests today, both those games would likely be allowed in (Pokemon at the very least).

Also if this contest ran today, maybe Mass Effect 2 wins it all >_>

See this is why the 'year of' tournaments seem more fun to look at than the retroactive ones. Seeing what people thought at the time and how they get caught up in hype that died down so hard in future years, seeing the cult hits that had yet to pop, it's great. Like does anybody talk about DKCR these days? Yet it walked to the semis, its only challenge being Heavy Rain of all things.

That said, the final is still probably the same two today. Could see it going either way. I never realised how weird 2010 was outside of those two though- so many divisive games, disappointments, and great games that flew under the radar at release.

While mostly true, if ran today with the same bracket, I think DKCR would possibly get to the semis again unless Red Dead beats it. I wouldn't be surprised if Heavy Rain lost to Limbo.

Best Game of 2011
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=417051

Ran: January 2012
Overall top seed: Uncharted 3 - Drake's Deception
1 seeds: Uncharted 3, Skyward Sword, Arkham City, Pokemon Black/White
Final Four: First three games, Portal 2
Ultimate Loser: Battlefield 3
Championship: Portal 2 defeated Uncharted 3 36-13

First off, the poll...
January: Ghost Trick - Phantom Detective
February: Marvel vs Capcom 3
March: Pokemon Black/White
April: Portal 2
May: LA Noire
June: inFamous 2
July: Catherine
August: Deus Ex - Human Revolution
September: Gears of War 3
October: Batman - Arkham City
November: Uncharted 3
December: Mario Kart 7

In a rare turn of events, considering how stacked November was, plus the results of said poll, Uncharted 3 earned the overall top seed narrowly beating Skyward Sword and Skyrim by only a few votes. Skyward Sword's performance netted a #1 seed, and Skyrim got to be #2 in its region. Arkham City won a month that featured Dark Souls and Kirby's Return to Dreamland, so a #1 seed was justified. Finally, Pokemon was in full swing as usual, so B/W got the final #1 seed.

It didn't take long for business to pick up. Gears of War 3 bombed as a #4 seed, losing to Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One in the first round. Mario Kart 7 lost to #12 seed Forza Motorsport 4 in the first round. Marvel vs Capcom 2 crapped out as a #2 seed, losing to Bastion in round 2. #11 seed Outland upset Shadows of the Damned in OT. Skyrim's chances of making the finals were dashed in round 3 when it was upset by Dark Souls. So how about those #1 seeds?

Uncharted 3 lived up to its predecessor's run in 2009, easily disposing of Corpse Party, You Don't Know Jack, Dead Space 2, and Bastion to net the first final four spot. Skyward Sword had an easy bout with FIFA 12 before having close matches with Sonic Generations, Super Mario 3D Land, and Dark Souls to get the second final four spot. Arkham City looked like a beast, tearing up a baseball game, The Witcher 2, and LA Noire in the first three rounds. Batman finally broke a sweat in the Elite Eight when Ghost Trick took the Dark Knight to overtime. Batman escaped with a 48-46 win for the third spot in the final four. Before we discuss the 4th semifinal slot, let's skip ahead, shall we?

I said 2011's tournament brought a hint of controversy, and it happened in the semifinals between Uncharted 3 and Skyward Sword. Halfway through the 24 hours, Skyward Sword jumped to a ridiculously large lead. 3/4ths of the way, Uncharted 3 started surging. The one thing I noticed? A large majority of the votes were from users I've never seen on Board 8. Uncharted 3 and Skyward Sword's game boards both had links directing to the match at hand. The fix was in, and a double rally had occurred. After a set period of time fishing out the rallied votes, the match was tied at 37. When it's all said and done, these are to determine what Board 8 thinks is the best game of the year, not CE or some random specified game board, so I stand by my decision to enforce overtime. The end result? Uncharted 3 pulls through, winning said match 72-64 and giving the series its 2nd championship appearance in three years; everything was looking like Nathan Drake would have his theme being played in the end.

And then Portal 2 happened.

Portal 2 must have taken it personally that Pokemon got the last #1 seed over it. First victim was Trails in the Sky, losing 16-3. Second victim was Dynasty Warriors 6 with a 21-6 blowout. In round 3, Portal 2 puts up 75% on Mortal Kombat, winning 27-9. Then it was time for #1 vs #2, and Portal 2 proceeded to beat the brakes off of Pokemon Black/White, with an astounding 29-11 final score. In the Final Four, Portal 2 had its closest match in the entire contest, still putting up 60% on Arkham City, beating the Dark Knight himself 32-18. And the championship match? The score posted at the beginning of the topic; Nathan Drake went into the Finals looking like a million dollars and came out looking like a potato as Portal 2 delivered the biggest blowout in tournament history.

Portal 2's run remains the single greatest tournament run in the 25 contests I've ran for GotY. It had a strong following here back in 2011-12, and everything fell in the right place at the right time. If the same bracket was ran today, I couldn't guarantee Portal 2 would repeat, only because of Dark Souls and Skyrim slowly gaining ground over the past few years and honestly saying the winner of that would face Portal 2 in a Championship match today. The winner between Portal 2 and Dark Souls/Skyrim is debatable on all fronts.

Two final notes. First off, Battlefield became the first series to have two Ultimate Losers.

Second off, the other hot topic of discussion was the idea of Xenoblade Chronicles being put in this tournament. At the time of August's poll, there was no news of the game coming out in North America, but I decided to hold out on hope and come to a decision by December. Thankfully by then, Nintendo finally listened to the people and announced an April 2012 release date for Xenoblade in North America.

Therefore, Xenoblade would finally have a crack at the contest come January 2013.

We had Skyward Sword in the semis here? Yikes!

I have participated in almost every nomination round/tournament, so I must have been vocally displeased when it defeated Super Mario 3D Land.

i was referring to portal vs trails

i'm not inclined to overestimate how much more popular trails is here now but it feels dangerous in that otherwise mostly poorly aged bracket

it is true ss would surely fall sooner but i think it's still good to make r4. i get a sense generations has faded a little too much now and everything else a lot more so

I think Portal 2 would still do well (though Pokemon B/W would probably put up much more of a fight), Uncharted is the one I can't see getting past the semis these days. And I have no idea who would get out of the Skyward Sword/Mario 3D Land/Dark Souls/Skyrim quadrant. Sonic Generations and Deus Ex might have something to say even!

Arkham City v Ghost Trick being so close back then is cool, I guess B8 had already taken to Ace Attorney stuff by this point.

After the Fall 2010 Contest, Deus Ex is getting sacked every chance it gets. Their fanboys whined over a fucking win.

Today, it's either Dark Souls or Skyrim getting out of that region, and they'd beat Uncharted 3 in the semis.

Best Game of 2012
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=439510

Ran: January 2013
Overall top seed: Borderlands 2
1 seeds: Borderlands 2, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Walking Dead, Zero Escape: VLR
Final Four: First three games, Pokemon Black/White 2
Ultimate Loser: Spelunky
Championship: Xenoblade Chronicles defeated Borderlands 2 24-18

2012... the Mayans got it wrong, Obama defeats Romney, and both Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson have incredible seasons after spending the previous year on the shelf. It was also a nice year for games for the most part! Let's start with the monthly winners...

January - Final Fantasy XIII-2
February - Resident Evil: Revelations
March - Mass Effect 3
April - Xenoblade Chronicles
May - Max Payne 3
June - Pokemon Conquest
July - Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy
August - Sleeping Dogs
September - Borderlands 2
October - Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward
November - The Walking Dead
December - Far Cry 3

An interesting lineup nonetheless. Borderlands 2, Zero Escape, and Walking Dead won busy months, so their top seeds were justified. Xenoblade had the hype behind it and a dominating month so it grabbed the fourth top seed. Overall went to Borderlands 2 based on both performance and the fact that it was just recently voted GameFAQs' Game of the Year.

The stage was set, and the tournament was underway. The vote totals were lower than those in 2011 and 2010, as it was around this moment that the site (and Board 8) had slightly less visitors than usual (either that or people felt this bracket was underwhelming. Either way, I'm not trying to find that answer out). In the first round, only two upsets occurred; the first being #4 seed Pokemon Conquest losing by a single vote to Hotline Miami, and the second being #5 seed WWE '13 losing to Darksiders II. In round 2, a major unthinkable happened as Zero Escape failed to live up to its #1 seed, losing 10-7 to #8 seed Dragon's Dogma.

In the other divisions, all three remaining top seeds lived up to their hype. Walking Dead trounced FTL, Mark of the Ninja, and Kid Icarus: Uprising; its only close match was in round 3, beating Dishonored 12-7. Xenoblade Chronicles had some easy wins against some Atelier game and New Super Mario Bros U, before failing to double XCOM, and then having a respectable victory against Mass Effect 3 25-17 in the Elite Eight. Finally, Borderlands 2 mowed down a baseball game, Resident Evil 6, and Soulcalibur V before having a surprisingly close match in the Elite Eight against Halo 4.

...hold on a second, the fuck?! Halo had a history of bombing hard in these tournaments, but 4 was good enough to get a #6 seed going in. It wasted no time disposing of Paper Mario: Sticker Star and was expected to lose to Sleeping Dogs. Instead, we got a 10-9 Halo 4 victory and a date with #2 seed Final Fantasy XIII-2, so easy win for Final Fantasy, right? Nope, Master Chief put Sarah down 12-9 and headed on to face Borderlands 2 in a match that was close the whole time. Halo 4 lost that one 23-19, but hats off to Master Chief for finally getting in the Elite Eight.

It was Zero Escape and Pokemon's region where a revelation came via PM and one that possibly affected past tournaments. During round 3, I received word from a user that someone had been using 3 alt accounts in nearly every topic. After further research from other users and various sites that had some archived info, the accusation of this person using alts was confirmed true. I kept quiet, just not counting the three extra votes they were casting. For example, if I had kept counting the extra votes, Journey would have beaten Pokemon B/W2 by a score of 14-13 in the Elite Eight. Instead, Pokemon won 13-11 and made its third Final Four appearance.

Day one of the semis was whatever; Borderlands 2 smacks Pokemon 21-10 to get the finals. Xenoblade vs. Walking Dead, on the other hand... oh boy...

To the surprise of everyone, Xenoblade and Walking Dead was close. Very close. And then the cat was let out of the bag when said user with 3 extra accounts voted four times for Walking Dead; two other users called him out on it. Had I counted the extra votes, Walking Dead would have won 25-23 over Xenoblade Chronicles. Instead, Xenoblade advanced 23-22. The finals were as expected; Borderlands kept it close, but Xenoblade never lost its lead and won the match 24-18 (or 24-18-2 if you count those still voting for Walking Dead).

The tournament wasn't received by a few users, solely because of how I went through with Xenoblade/TWD. Admittedly, if I could go back and redo the tournament, I would have had an OT match to determine a true winner. It sucks, but eight years later, it is what it is.

As for if the tournament was ran today, the only thing I know for certain is Xenoblade is stomping through everyone and Borderlands 2 might not even make the semis. No clue who wins Walking Dead or Zero Escape's division today.

Regardless, 2013 looked to be a better year for gaming, and the tournament that ensued was almost my final GotY tournament, considering the events to come in 2014...

Best Game of 2013
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=450690

Ran: January 2014
Overall top seed: The Legend of Zelda - A Link Between Worlds
1 seeds: Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3D World, The Last of Us, BioShock Infinite
Final Four: See above
Ultimate Loser: The Wonderful 101
Championship: A Link Between Worlds defeated The Last of Us 65-59 in overtime

January: Ni no Kuni - Wrath of the White Witch
February: Fire Emblem Awakening
March: BioShock Infinite
April: Shin Megami Tensei - Devil Summoner Soul Hackers
May: Metro - Last Light
June: The Last of Us
July: Shin Megami Tensei IV
August: Saints Row IV
September: Grand Theft Auto V
October: Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies
November: Legend of Zelda - A Link Between Worlds
December: Walking Dead Season 2, Episode 1

A little complex, and a few dead months there with Metro winning a GotM poll at one point. However, some of these results were very close and made seeding a little more challenging. BioShock and Last of Us looked damn good blowing out March and June, so they were in. A Link Between Worlds defeated Mario 3D World for November's poll by 1-2 votes, so for only the 2nd time ever, two games released in the same month got top seeds, with Link getting the overall spot. GTA5 barely edged Rayman Legends for September, so it was only right they both got 2 seeds. The weakest months settled for 4 and 5 seeds mostly.

And to the surprise of no one, those lower seeded GotM winners proceeded to exit the tournament as fast as they entered. Devil Summoner lost in OT 23-20 to #13 seeded Arkham Origins Blackgate. Metro: Last Light lost 11-6 to #12 seeded Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons. That episode of Walking Dead got blown out 8-2 by #13 seeded Runner 2. They weren't alone on the upset board though for round 1; we also saw #5 seeded DmC lose 8-5 to Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, #6 seed Luigi's Mansion 2 lose 9-7 to Mega Man Unlimited, and Dragon's Crown winning 13-10 against #6 seed Tearaway.

As you noticed at the beginning, all top seeds won their regions, though all paths had different stories. The Last of Us had it the easiest, making fools out of Killer is Dead, Lego Marvel Super Heroes, and Arkham Origins (not Blackgate), before barely missing 66% on Rayman Legends but still winning 25-13 there. Super Mario 3D World would be the next easiest run, holding Sonic Lost World, Gran Turismo 6, and Shin Megami Tensei IV to 4 votes each, and then beating Phoenix Wright a respectable 17-11. Zelda would be next on the dominant order, as LBW easily disposed of the attempted SimCity reboot and Thomas Was Alone, but then had the match of a lifetime against Tomb Raider.

Many would question how that was possible, but let's be real here: the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider was fantastic and was exactly what Lara Croft needed to be relevant again, but for the right reasons this time. Tomb Raider outscored a Scribblenauts game and Arkham Origins Blackgate a combined 41-4, and then took Link to the limit in a very respectable 17-15 loss. Link carried that slight struggle into the Elite Eight, beating Fire Emblem 14-11 to earn a semifinal spot. Which leaves us with BioShock Infinite...

BioShock's region was set up for a potential BioShock vs Grand Theft Auto showdown. However, in typical GTA fashion, GTAV loses 15-11 in round 3; instead of a BioShock/GTA battle, Booker DeWitt had to go face to face with this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxq_B2KPQDY

Revengeance came in all swords blazing, dicing up Cloudberry Kingdom and Dragon's Crown before upsetting GTA5. In the Elite Eight, Revengeance forced OT against Infinite, giving us a damn good 2 day match. However, it wasn't meant to be, as BioShock won with a final score of 46-43

In a shocking turn of events, BOTH semifinals matches were nuts. Link Between Worlds and Mario 3D World earned their #1 seeds in this battle, as Mario forced overtime at the end. Link turned on the thrusters and escaped into the finals with a 38-31 victory that took place over two days. The Last of Us and BioShock Infinite was close the entire 24 hours, and I had to count three times to make sure I wasn't bullshitting myself. Final score? Last of Us scraping by 24-23 over Infinite, setting up Link vs Joel in the finals.

Not to be outdone by either Mario or Lara Croft, Joel and Ellie's apocalyptic survival adventure took Link to the limit, forcing yet another overtime match for the 3DS hit, and the 2nd overtime championship match in tournament history. In day 2 of this showdown, Link pulled through in the end to win with a grand score of 65-59.

After the way 2012 ended, it was nice to see the following GotY tournament return to its glory days, even if only for a little bit. At the time, while I didn't announce it, it was almost my final tournament ran on the board. One month before the tournament started, I officially swore into the Army on Christmas Eve and had to wait roughly 2.5 months before going to Basic Training. I did announce that I would retire from running the Board 8 NFL Pick'em League, which I still consider to be my finest contribution to this board, and handed the torch to th3l3fty. I didn't know how much the Army would affect my time here, so I kept at a minimum on Board 8 for most of 2014; I retired from running the Pick'em, I "retired" from the UCA, and I sporadically just posted on B8 from time to time inbetween classes at AIT.

There's one huge positive I can take from all that I just mentioned. In the final month before Basic Training, after the Pick'em League ended, I began making a topic listing my 50 favorite games of all time. I worked on it little by little, posting detailed writeups and everything, and managed to finish one day before leaving for my new career. The one thing I didn't expect? A group of users here bumping my topic and keeping it alive for the duration of Basic Training, where I had zero access to the internet for over 2 months.

Thanks guys, that really meant a lot =)

Forgot how weird a year 2012 was, not a bad gaming year like many say but the big AAA ones were just... eh, not a BL guy myself. If Walking Dead had managed to pull off the Xenoblade upset this would've been a horribly aged final. I think Zero Escape probably gets out of its division these days.

Worst results: Spec Ops losing to Theatrhythm and Kid Icarus getting wiped by TWDG.

As for 2013, I think Bioshock does much worse these days and poor Pikmin 3 would get more of a shot than losing 8-3 in round 1, but aside from that I think the results would be pretty similar. Very curious how Link Between Worlds v FE Awakening would go today.
