Best Game of 2006
https://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?1&tid=197393

Ran: January 2007
Overall top seed: Guitar Hero II
1 seeds: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, New Super Mario Bros, Final Fantasy XII
Final Four: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, Okami, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Ultimate Loser: Table Tennis
Championship: Okami defeated Kingdom Hearts II 14-12

With the 2005 tournament posting zero Xbox 360 titles, 2006's tournament would guarantee there'd be next gen entries from all three major consoles. The 360 got in Gears of War and Saints Row, the Wii got in Trauma Center: Second Opinion and Excite Truck, and even the 599 US DOLLARS got in Resistance: The Fall of Man. The GotM polls went down like so...

January: Mega Man X Collection
February: Grandia III
March: Kingdom Hearts II
April: Brain Age
May: New Super Mario Bros
June: Street Fighter Alpha Anthology
July: Valkyrie Profile - Lenneth
August: Dead Rising
September: Okami
October: Final Fantasy XII
November: Guitar Hero II
December: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin

Based on how close some of the monthly results were (February, March, and November really standing out in this one), some 2nd place games really deserved to be ranked higher than games with practically no competition. This allowed Twilight Princess and Elder Scrolls IV to get #2 seeds, and a #3 seed for Gears of War. Fight Night 3 and Grandia III finished neck and neck for February, so both of them got #4 seeds. Little did we know the upsets that were going to rock this tournament...

Right out the gate, New Super Mario Bros failed to live up to its #1 seed, nearly losing to a Ghost Recon game in round 1. Mario would complete his flop in round 2, losing to #8 seed Half-Life: Episode One. Remember Fight Night Round 3 getting a #4 seed? Fight Night got KO'd in round 1 by GTA: Vice City Stories. Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria and Madden NFL 07 would also flop as #4 seeds, losing respectively to Mortal Kombat Armageddon and SMT: Devil Summoner. The last big first round flop was Brain Age proving it didn't deserve a #3 seed losing to Splinter Cell: Double Agent in a low voting match. Low votals were everywhere in the 2006 tournament; Resistance beating Phantasy Star Universe 12-5 was the most voted match in the first round and the 4th most voted match overall.

When round 3 began, we had the following...
1 seeds: Guitar Hero II, Kingdom Hearts II, Final Fantasy XII
2 seeds: Twilight Princess, Oblivion, Okami
3 seeds: Gears of War, Portrait of Ruin
5 seeds: SFA Anthology, FF5 Advance, MGS Portable Ops
8 seed: Half-Life 2 - Episode One
10 seed: Trauma Center - Second Opinion
11 seed: Bully
12 seed: Shadow Hearts - From the New World
14 seed: Splinter Cell - Double Agent

A unique set of games on the lower end. In the end, the contest finally picked up some steam in the Elite Eight, as Guitar Hero II held off Twilight Princess by 2 votes, Kingdom Hearts II doubled Oblivion, and then those two winners combined for 34 votes in the final four match against one another. On the other side of the bracket, Okami finished off a strong run to the finals and knocked off KH2 by two votes in order to put Capcom up 2-0 in these tournaments.

However, if the contest were reran today, I guarantee you 95% of this bracket doesn't happen.

Notable Matches
  • Guitar Hero II vs Twilight Princess - Elite Eight
  • Guitar Hero II vs Kingdom Hearts II - Final Four
