#23 Command & Conquer: Red Alert (Microsoft Windows, 1996)

The first C&C game set the stage for what real-time strategy could be, and managed to be a successful game in its own right. Red Alert really polished up the concept and transformed it into the premier strategy series for the next decade.

I spoke to the strengths of C&C when I talked about that game, and Red Alert is better in pretty much every way. That's not to say that it replaces its predecessor, because there are enough unique things about to first game to make it worthwhile. But if you could only play one or the other, I would recommend Red Alert without a second thought. Despite being marginally more complicated, it matches the accessibility of the first game.

I really enjoy historical fiction, and the alternate history story of Red Alert is a favorite of mine. The live-action cutscenes shown around the missions are as hammy as ever, and I could not get enough of them.
