"I just want to say, I watched this series with my friend David when we were nineteen. David thought it was amazing and was like dude its so deep, and I just instantly recognized that all of the Christian symbolism meant nothing. More importantly, at the time, I was confused about why Asuka was half-Japanese, it seemed like a useless detail for a character whose entire backstory revolves around being foreign. Little did I know that that was just a recurring thing in anime, where the foreigners are either half-Japanese or full Japanese and raised somewhere else"

Oh, hey, I actually remembered something from my Japanese courses from nearly 20 years ago!

Do you remember how being born from a wizard and a muggle in the Harry Potter universe had kind of a stigma attached to it? It's sort of like that in Japan, for real (or it was while my instructor lived there). Some folks would call half-Japanese people "halfu", or something to that effect, and it made getting some forms of employment difficult.

I'd imagine that's what's coming into play in the anime trope.
