HE PULLED THE PIN?!

What the fuck were the adults thinking?

When it comes to grenades, simply pulling the pin isn't the issue. It's kinda the equivalent of taking a safety off on a gun. iirc, you can even put the pin back in. What activates the explosive device is squeezing it and then then releasing. And technically if it was actually inert, none of that would have been an issue.

Buying an actual explosive for a 12yo is on the parents, IMO. Yeah, the store is partly responsible.

No, the store is 100% responsible. You aren't supposed to sell weapons to kids under any circumstances... actually, after re-reading the story, it's not clear who actually purchased it. Given that it happened in the home, it could have been the parents as well. It also doesn't specify whether the parents gave him the grenade, as he might have just been fooling around with it. Regardless, that's still more on the store than anybody because they made false assurances (and after the store gets sued, they could in turn sue the person who sold them the grenades who made those assurances to them).

Even if it was inactive, he could do something like be walking down the street with it or take it to school then get shot by a cop or something.

That's not a terribly likely scenario, and it presupposes a lot of other stuff when facts aren't available to support it.
