Hang on, Symbicort won't won't replace rescue inhalers for sudden symptoms? My fucking doctor took me off of Ventolin, telling me "You can use the Symbicort as a rescue inhaler".

Doesn't help that I don't have coverage for prescriptions, and Symbicort costs like $200, whereas the Ventolin, having a cheaper generic version, costs $20.

Now I'm glad he retired.

Symbicort's initial prescribed use (which is when this ad dates from) was as a control inhaler, rather than a rescue one, but recent literature (like, within the past couple years) has supported its use as a rescue inhaler as well. Personally, I'm in the same boat as you, and I'd much rather keep a cheap ventolin puffer on-hand for my occasional attack than use up expensive Symbicort doses (which I don't even have at all right now because it's too expensive and my school insurance has lapsed >.>), but it does apparently work.
