Marvel vs. Capcom came out in 1998. original Smash came out 1999. the MCU of fantasy crossovers is still Marvel. i mean you can still go back further for the previous entries - 96 for X-men vs Street Fighter - but MvC is probably where that one really took off. hell, the idea of random third parties being in a mainstream was a thing in Soul Calibur 2.
