SMB or Mario 64.
the latter immediately grasped 3D gameplay as that console generation occurred and set the foundation for the future there. it's rough now but still very playable. former is SMB and defined core mechanics of gaming still used today.

You have 50 minutes for me to tell you why it's Dragon Quest V?

But like from a purely structural standpoint, yeah probably either Super Mario Bros, Wizardry, or The Portopia Serial Murder Case just based on pure influence. And being Super Mario Bros.

That's what i thought too really. Like technically SMB is a huge milestone but I can't help but think all its lessons would've been learned elsewhere in that same time period. Mario 64 meanwhile... It says a lot to add an entirely different movement axis and get it right immediately.

Mario 64 isn't even the first Mario with 3D movement!

What exactly makes SMB more revolutionary than something like Donkey Kong or Pitfall? It's certainly an improvement in the formula of "guy running to the right and jumping" but SM64 feels like a better answer to me. Not trying to be cynical I'm curious what was so revolutionary about SMB.

The scale of SMB was leagues beyond what anyone else was doing on consoles on the time. Console games were just home versions of something that you could play in arcades at that point. SMB was probably the first console game that really showed what the market could become

After the Mario series, it might be Super Smash Bros. Melee. We went from a Nintendo crossover platform-fighting game to a series that:

* Popularized tournaments to becoming an international phenomenon throughout the series
* In doing so, gained the top attendance at EVO 2019 and Smash 4 was also shown on Disney XP once at EVO 2018
* Spawned multiple documentaries
* Single-handedly challenged the FGC with its ever growing cluster of fans vs the scattered fans across multiple titles
* Spawned a sequel that featured 3rd-party characters which was unheard of for its time
* Spawned another sequel that brought forth said tournaments to international status
* Spawned yet *another* sequel that brought back 70+ characters from the entire series which, again, is unheard of. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon had a similar concept but not nearly to the level of depth, variety, or copyright-securing that Nintendo accomplished.

Smash has completely broken ground worldwide. Every time a new game was coming out, even on the weak Wii U, the entire world's eyes are on it. No game has people requesting their favorite characters to be added quite like the Smash series. It's the perfect unification of competitive fighter and party platform-fighting game. The attention to detail with animations, sound effects, backgrounds, and music is, again, unheard of for any other game to emulate.

The reason I say Melee has nothing to do with its scene or meta. The foundation Melee built was an achievement on its own thanks to the single-player unlockables, extra content, gorgeous visuals, amazing soundtrack, and everything it spawned afterward. SSB64 felt like a prototype in comparison. Melee brought forth the things we loved in Brawl, Smash 4, and SSBU and was used in the foundation for these magnificent games.

There is nothing in the world like Smash.

guess if we're naming shit randomly...

the PC wing would probably go...

Ultima Online
Doom
Half Life 2
Starcraft
The Sims
Team Fortress 2 (especially when you consider the F2P model since that's the grandpa of gacha and lootboxes)

console wing...
Super Metroid (i'd cite this one for the Metroidvania genre more so than the previous games)
Metal Gear Solid
FF7
Devil May Cry
Halo
Demon's Soul? though maybe Dark Souls would be better suited here.

was also thinking of a rhythm game in there like Beatmania or DDR since they did greatly impact the arcade market and expanded into consoles but unsure.

The first game to come to mind was Metal Gear Solid. It did things that I'd never seen before (the helicopter sequence near the beginning used the rumble feature in a transformative nature), and it was arguably more effective in providing a cinematic experience than even FF VII.

Actually agree Super Smash Bros is at least worth considering. But you had X-Mem vs Street Fighter sorta giving proof of concept to crossover fighters being worth thinking about so it does diminish it somewhat

I mean I guess the weird damage system and sheer scale would count for something but I'd say having character crossovers in a fighter counts for the meat and Capcom had been doing that for a while now

A lot of those crossovers (and I'm sorry for this) were still considered "real and legitimate fighters worthy of the name of fighting game". Smash 64 came along and there was this huge paradigm shift.

You know you're revolutionary when you're the disrupter and the established order hates you

If you're going that route you're actually arguing for Melee I'd say. Smash 64 tourneys never really got big enough to register for fighting game elitists.

I don't really think causing "u mad" in a fairly small section of gamers is enough to be thought of in this discussion though
