379: STURGILL SIMPSON - IT AINT ALL FLOWERS:

https://open.spotify.com/track/69Rgsy7NjASkqeJUwEGsv6

Nominator: Xeybozn (11/20)
Source: Metamodern Sounds in Country Music (6/10)

Initial Score: 60.16 [#232]
Revised Score: 60.60 [#282]
Final Score: 58.02 [#379]

(First Thoughts: Some very interesting instrumental work here, I really enjoy the intro and some of the outro (goes on a bit too long). I dont particularly dislike the lyrics or the singing, but I dont really care about them either.)

I like the partially reversed instrumentals, backwards music just sounds neat and he implements it in a different way. And some of the lyrics seem like my type of thing: Tired of feeling weighed down from carrying round all the pain that keeps me torn at least sounds like the sort of lyric Im supposed to be drawn to...

I do like the song, but not as much as it seems like I should.

[Final Thoughts: I still really like the instrumentals, but Im less interested in the main parts of the song.]

378: MAZEDUDE - EXILED SAMPLES:

https://mazedude.bandcamp.com/track/exiled-samples

Nominator: sergiocornaga (8/18)

Initial Score: 49.97 [#422]
Revised Score: 49.99 [#441]
Final Score: 58.03 [#378]

(First Thoughts: I love the idea of the song, but not so much the execution of it.)

I love noise. I can think of nothing Id be more interested in than what Mazedude did with this track, importing non-audio files into audio programs to create garbage noise and making a song out of them.

The sticking point for me is that he probably cleaned the noise up a bit too much. He succeeds at making actual music, but I want something more brutal and cacophonic that questions what music even is. Going back to something I referenced back at my first topic, I actually kinda enjoy listening to the early parts of What a data track sounds like (Sega CD):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2IhLBcIXUI

Not even Ive listened to the full 50 minutes, but listen to the early parts where you have static, highly sped-up & distorted voices, and some parts that sound vaguely like actual music. (Theres some similar parts around the 9 minute to 11 minutes mark) and I actually like those sections.

Meanwhile Mazedudes track is something a standard sentient lifeform would recognize as music which is far less interesting to me than pure noise. (Though even the sections I really like from that Sega CD video would only rank somewhere in the 60 to 70 point range).

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: There is a good stretch starting around 2:58. Thats very trippy, like drifting through space while all your technology is breaking down. Its a short-lived section, but I do like it and think its enough to finally move this song up to slightly like tier.]

[Final Thoughts: I think the high 50s is as far as this can go. I love the idea and Im starting to come around on it, but I dont quite like it enough to go up another tier.]
