But yes, there are some bad managers as well. I recently had a director who could talk a good talk, but when it came down to actually managing, all they knew how to do was ask why the work wasn't done yesterday and tell everyone to work harder. Glad when they went bye bye. My supervisor is literally on call 24/7, 365 days a year unless he uses holidays. He is great at what he does though - he worked his way up from frontline work so he is a great resource, especially for debriefing, but I hate calling him on weekends. Technically, to some of my clients I make my self available close to 24/7 - but not to the level my supervisor is.
