The thing for me is that unlike actual race cars, marbles can only take one line based on the laws of physics if there's only track in front of them. To me, the obstacles put excitement into a race that's otherwise likely a bunch of marbles hugging the wall in a line because, well...they're marbles. To me the obstacles give that ability to pass that makes it feel more like an actual race.
