Mistakes happen, yes. Do you have a reason to generalize that one hospital's errors to more institutions?

Because if there's one thing this pandemic has taught us, it's that every news outlet is a trustworthy source for public health information.

That's really not a particularly high standard of competence. Every test result is personally identifiable (it has to be in order to communicate results), plus already-positive people that are getting retested will have that identified as their reason for being tested.

Furthermore, even if we assume that all numbers are being grossly inflated by clerical errors and the real numbers are, say, a quarter of that (bearing in mind that an assumption of that magnitude is completely baseless and utterly absurd), is that not still a concerning number of infections and deaths? That would still be ~300,000 cases and 65,000 deaths in 8 months, with no sign of slowing down. That's still an enormous number for an infectious disease and absolutely warrants a public response (and, again, there's absolutely no reason to believe the numbers are anywhere close to that low).
