As someone whose usually on his side of the fence but can only speak from personal experience, it's because so many prominent defenders of Melee are insufferable jackasses who treat other people like they're total morons for not bowing down to Melee. Obviously that's not the entire fandom, but it's enough of them and they're very loud. Melee is God, everyone who doesn't follow Melee is just a sellout to the man.

Melee is the MAGA of fighting games.
