The parents set their sights too high with this one. Nobody is going to award you millions of dollars because someone denied you the right to identify your religion for all to see.

That said, I would think this was fair if they were simply suing for the right to wear the mask. This isn't a club which has a dress code prohibited religious imagery. The school system is an institution which you are mandated to attend. Yes, private schools do exist -- but only if you can afford them. If an individual wishes to wear a cross, a yarmulke, a hijab, or Buddhist prayer beads at all times, they should have a right to do so. If it means they're not allowed in certain places, they can adjust themselves accordingly. But they can't opt to stay out of the school. The state beckons.

I know there are people who salivate at the thought of eliminating religion, but they're little better than those who wish for religious theocracy. No one ever has a right to say, "You must be here and leave your religion at the door."
