I mean, the virus got to the US largely from Europe, not China, but let's not let facts get in the way of a good rant.

Also worth noting that, by and large, Trump wasn't called "racist and xenophobic" when he shut down the borders, because it happened to be the one time where his default foreign policy happened to be the correct move.

But even then he managed to fuck it up. At best, the closed borders bought him time before the virus arrived on American shores. So what did he do with that time? Did he sound the alarm and warn people about the threat posed by the virus? Beef up national stockpiles of badly needed medical equipment? Create and train a contact tracing department to help contain the spread? Put together a coordinated, unified response with the state governments?

Nope. Instead, he spent the next two months blathering about how COVID was a democrat hoax to try and hurt his chances for re-election and how it was just a handful of people from China and pretty soon it would all go away and that his government totally had things under control so no need to panic... right up until a stock market meltdown finally forced him to act, by which time it was already too late because the virus was running rampant and the government had absolutely no plan for dealing with it.

I mean, the US has had the worst COVID numbers in the world for nearly nine months and it is only now that places like India and Brazil (not coincidentally both countries that are run by their own right-wing populist morons) are starting to challenge America for the title. That's about as damning an indictment against Trump's response to the virus as there can possibly be.
