He's reminiscing about a girl he broke up with but the break up was in the past. (He's wondering what happened to the girl. "Once upon a time, once when you were mine") I tend not to like depressing songs so its really hard to think of good songs that fit. Oh here is one "The winner takes it all" by ABBA.
