Couldn't stay away for long.

Even if your ideal is great, it's just a dream if you can't fulfill it!

Izlude takes Alma to who knows where (my secret princess theory gets stronger!) and we witness the grand return of Wiegraf! It's no surprise that he is back, but being allied with the church is not where I expected him to end up. Ramza says as much in the midst of this battle. There's some really good conversation happening here but the battle itself was distracting me a bit, Wiegraf comes at us aggressively with his new Agrias-like powers and does major damage from the offset.

You'll never know the feeling of the 'Meager'! You may think you know it, but you've never lived it! You'd never know! 'Reality' is far harsher than you can possibly imagine. Why do you blame me? You have no right to blame me!

Thankfully it's not a 'defeat all enemies' map, I'd normally try to beat everyone anyway but this one seemed so tough I got through it purely by rushing Wiegraf in a couple sets of turns. Even then only two people were left standing. Call it cheesing if you want but it was the only way I could see to get it done!

Wiegraf seems to escape but upon following him out of the monastery it's clear he's been mortally wounded. Izlude reluctantly leaves him (I trust Alma in his hands honestly) but then- the stone speaks! Wiegraf transforms into another Lucavi demon and leaves. I'm honestly pretty sad at this, I had hopes for a face turn for Wiegraf (or for Ramza to shift to siding with him) and with him being gone for so long it's a shame he shows up so briefly before turning like this. It's a great development narratively but a shame nonetheless. This game is very dark :( Not looking forward to meeting him again, hopefully he keeps some of his old self still...

Simon dies too after handing us a big chunky lore book, which I then read in the menu. (Finally back to the world map! Yay!) It's a description of the history of St. 'not-Jesus' Ajora, and I really appreciate the amount of detail they put into here. They have the approved religious version of events, Germonik's 'real' version, Simon's opinions and finally Ramza casting doubts even on Simon's conclusion. I like how non-definitive the text is even when we're ostensibly getting the true version. Of course this is a game and we'll probably get a clear answer eventually, but I'm enjoying how they're handling this. And how they're handling lore in general, leaving large parts of it in the menus/bars but piecemealing it out, not giving ridiculous dumps of text (except this one lol, but this has clear plot relevance) constantly like in later FF entries. Also all the history is told from a biased perspective which is neat.

One notable thing in the Germonik Scriptures is the reference to a Golden Age where airships flew the skies- is this game set long after XII after all?! Another note- a couple of the jobs I've completed have given 'Unexplored Land' rewards, though they seem to be locked to the menu and haven't opened up new areas of the map. Is there anything to this? One of them mentions the Red Wings and Baron- is FFIV set in Ivalice too?! So many connections!

Ramza is told to come to Riovanes Castle, there's a very nice scene for both Delita and Ovelia, and four new maps open up so that's enough! Really cool sequences today.

Most people have to act the roles given to them... Then again, most of them haven't even noticed they're even acting.
