DAY 26.4: Host
On Shudder

You guys may have heard of Host as the post-pandemic Zoom-recorded movie. It's like Unfriended, but actually legitimately awesome.

Host is about a group of friends going on Zoom to have a virtual sance that goes very wrong.

That's really all the movie is about. This movie started filming and was put on Shudder in 12 days. The director held workshops for the actors on how to perform each, for lack of a better word, stunt.

What we get is a movie that doesn't do all of the idiotic melodramatic and story-based nonsense like Unfriended and some of the absolutely blitheringly stupid kills and stuff that happens (and I say that actually enjoying Unfriended). It's just straight up delivering scares, kills, and spooky Zoom-related shenanigans.

The thing that makes this so good is how effectively everything is filmed. For a movie created in twelve days. With a cast of literal nobodies. From a nobody director. Like I don't know how they could have possibly done the stunts they did to make this work. I really don't know. But they're just so good.

It's legitimately just unsettling to watch and becomes scary because I use Zoom and Teams all the time at work now. So I'm kind of used to this. But damn. This is just a movie you should watch if you liked Unfriended and want something better, or you want to see just a spectacle of horror movie stunts done before your very eyes by 100% amateurs in every sense of the word.

It clocks in at less than 1 hour, but they pack everything in there that it's just so fun to watch and enjoy while also getting scared. I was just in awe watching it. I was going to re-watch Unfriended but I feel like there's no point now. Host is such a superior movie that I'll just end up groaning at how inferior Unfriended is.

Huge, huge, huge recommend for Host.

PS - This has the best end credits I've ever seen, ever. It cannot be topped.
