I dropped of Pokemon in the Diamond/Pearl era and didn't even finish that game because I was feeling bored, like it was just more of the same. My favorite in the series up until that point was Crystal, because it has the benefit of allowing you to go back to the Kanto region like on Gold/Silver but also had the added benefit of being the first game to finally let you pick your gender. I liked going back to areas from previous games and seeing how old characters had changed or not. None of the later games I played offered that and I still am under the impression that is not a norm in Pokemon games.

I have heard some of the more recent games have had more engaging stories, and I do enjoy the core gameplay mechanics, so which are worth checking out?
