Is it fair to compare music to math? Honest question. I get that theory is describing certain relations and there are perhaps some constant elements, but at the same time I would think we would be remiss to say, for example, that there's a correct/true way to make use of consonance and dissonance given how the subjective reception thereof can vary so widely. Or supposing I was working on a song and had writer's block - music theory could uncover various ways forward but ultimately I couldn't necessarily "solve" the problem in as far as one way forward wouldn't necessarily be better than another

Edit: just noticed this was already adressed; missed that post. The analogy with language theory seems a bit closer to the mark.

Let's try mathematics: Are '0's and '1's racist? No, absolutely not - they only describe the mechanism of 'being' vs something 'not being'

Pogo claims it's the 0'1 and 1's that are racist

The only way '0's and '1's can be considered to be racist is when you have a human being with the desire to disenfranchise others and deprive them of the right of financial gain by having a bunch of '1's make up their bank account through institutions that go out of their way to not provide that knowledge or give them access to it are racist - it requires a separate concept from mathematics itself to be pushed towards racism. Again, it's the person and institutions that facilitate racism -- the concepts themselves are not racist unto themselves
