Tell me, what do you think general music theory is? If you don't think Shoenberg didn't write a few prominent theory books on notions of harmony and atonality, then I legitimately can't fathom what you think theory is.

"Tropes" as you call them are literally a study of general music theory. Do you think triplets and quintuplets aren't studied for their effect in music despite just being a "trope"? What bizarre, arbitrary definition of theory are you using to misconstrue the conversation so haphazardly?
