First off, even The Phantom Menace itself makes it clear that Midichlorians merely indicate force sensitivity rather than outright causing it. Hardly a fan of the film myself but this has to be one of the biggest misconceptions regarding the franchise.
I'll freely admit that I haven't watched PM in like five years, but I remember Qui-Gon saying something like midichlorians allow people to communicate with the Force or something. The way I understood it was that the midichlorians at least allow you to use the Force.

I think that's giving them a lot of credit. The only movie that went off in its own weird direction was TLJ; the others were basically what everyone expected.
