The level design was fine. Small walkthrough areas to pace out the big battle rooms worked out pretty well IMO. The areas with the real fighting were not super confined by any stretch.

What was wrong with the upgrade system? It was simple and let you easily get what you wanted

Nearly every gun in the game had a specific purpose. Sure on easy you could carbine/shotgun everything. But on higher difficulties, the average player would need to mix it up.

You act like healing and salts were a hard thing to come across. Every area was lousy with it and Liz constantly threw you what you needed if you were in dire need.

No manual saving. Yeah kinda sucky.

Hacking minigames could have been added. Im always a fan of more minigames. But it was a take it or leave it thing for me.

Random gears were part of the fun. If you could just pick the most OP ones for every run right off the bat, it would be kinda lame. By the end of the game you had a lot to choose from and it opens things up. I could see a NG+ being a very good addition to the game, i admit. Let people have fully maxed gear and guns to just play around with.

More choices would have been nice. Like part 2 had. I think time crunch got in the way of that.

When compared with Bio 1 it's lacking. Bio 1 areas were more open-world and you can go into different areas at different times with some backtracking. Some places were optional to go into and there for if you wanted to explore more. Bio 2 is a lot more straightforward but even in 2 I explored more than the straight lines Infinite was. Only time I can remember it wasn't a straight line was that lady comstock ghost battle which was marred by how awful everything about it was.

The problem is you don't have enough money them. You can only upgrade 3-4 which really discourages experimenting with weapons especially when the vox weapons come which are redundant to the founder weapons that you've already upgraded and require you to upgrade from scratch rather than share the same upgrade path as their founder counterpart. I've never seen anyone use vox weapons.

Every area was lousy with it and Liz constantly threw you what you needed if you were in dire need.
Right, that's the point. That's an example of watered down gameplay.

Gene tonics didn't give you the OP ones right off the bat either, you had to buy and upgrade them which I think is much more strategic than walking into a box that gives you a random gear, most of which were useless and situational. iirc for the higher difficulties most people just reset for a specific charge related setup.

And yeah, Bio 2 had the best gameplay to me. The flaws are that it's too short and had a barebones plot but Minerva's den makes up for it and personally I think even the main game had a more cohesive story than Infinite.
