Not lacking knowledge/experience doesn't mean you've trained as a chef. Most people cook and know how to cook to some degree. Culinary education is usually pretty important if you want to be a recognized chef. You can still get recognition and acclaim without the formal education, of course, but you'd have to have a lot of natural talent and cooking intuition. Again, not saying you lack knowledge or experience, or even that you're a bad cook, but if truly want to be recognized as a chef beyond empty compliments, a bit of culinary education can go a long way.
