It's tough to say whether Army of Darkness is the most well known Evil Dead movie. ED2 has groovy, but AoD has boomstick and hail to the king, baby! This is just a totally weird horror series in general. After the success of Evil Dead II, a half-parody remake of the first Evil Dead with a sequel story on top of it, the stage was set for a totally gigantic sequel, and AoD was just that. It was the big budget action entry in the franchise, but also proved to be the series' death knell as far as film sequels went, since being of a higher budget meant 11 million at the box office wasn't going to cut it anymore. Army of Darkness is known for its medieval setting and Arthurian inspired plot, as well as combining body horror with slapstick & exploring the concept of "Evil Ash", briefly alluded to in ED2. It's hardly a frightening watch, this is easily the least horror-focused film in the franchise, but that doesn't mean it's not a ton of fun or doesn't have its own moments of scariness either. For every Ash getting his face stretched comically scene, there's Evil Ash's eye growing out of good Ash's body which is one of the most visually barf-inducing shots ever (in a good way!). If you don't like this type of film which doesn't take itself seriously at all, I totally get it. I wasn't really that big on Evil Dead myself until the exceptional Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series (spoilers for later!), but now I'm able to much better appreciate the level of craft here as far as special effects go, and there's still a well-throughout thematic thread here as Ash battles his inner demons. Army of Darkness & Ash would live on in like a bazillion comic book series but its ending has always been contentious due to the theatrical version differing from the more bleak, post-apocalyptic original, which they tried exploring in the TV series before the show got unceremoniously cancelled. Okay before I start launching into the write-up about the series here, I'll just end it off by saying you probably know what Army of Darkness is, you either love it or you hate it, let's just leave it at that.

And it's gonna be a long October, and I don't have reasons to believe, in much of anything, alright
