You could easily get diamond gear, build a nether portal, create a house, and set up a food supply if you know what you are doing and are trying to go quick. Or you could spend 2 hours exploring 1 cave and then fall in lava and lose everything. Such is the true genius of the games success. You can go as hard or soft as you want in a variety of gameplay styles.
