999, or Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors is an intriguing visual novel/puzzle adventure for the DS, and one of its most infamous. With a set-up similar to the Saw films, it's something that's very familiar for a lot of people and thus easy to get into whether you have played this type of game already or not. Brushing shoulders with survival horror, 999 features plenty of interactive environmentals and lateral thinking. Solutions are never as cut and dry as you may think sometimes and that's a good thing, as long as you have a lot of patience and willing to work through it. Unlike Umineko, I felt way more encouraged to keep a healthy dosage of notes by my side throughout the adventure, as many puzzles involve keeping track of numbers such as a card game of baccarat. I thoroughly the enjoyed the puzzles, feeling like an escape room with much more of a ticking time bomb element involved making things extremely tense as death is possible at many points in the game. It's pretty spoilery to talk about the game's story too much, but I will say that although it has a great hook, a compelling antagonist, and several bizarre twist endings, I really can't say I cared for the game's cast all that much. And there's a character named Snake (okay, he's actually one of the better ones). The dialogue is wooden and mechanical, and is honestly just a straight bore to read through. The game also has a real tonal issue with humor and jokes coming at extremely inoppurtune moments, for lines that barely illicit a chuckle at best. Overall, it's a solid game if you love puzzlers, I can't say I totally loved it but I don't regret my time with it at all. It was an unexpected critical & commercial success, leading to an even more well-regarded sequel and a third that followed.
