Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
This is probably the hardest movie to talk about. Everything else, you can easily point to what makes them good or bad, the good decisions and the poor ones. But TLJ is a different story. I wonder how this got made. How did Disney approve Rian Johnson's idea to subvert everything that makes Star Wars what it is? That's not only a ballsy decision for a company that takes everything so safe, it's also incredibly stupid. Why would you not have a plan for the trilogy before you start filming the first one?

The main thing about this movie is that Rian Johnson takes all of JJ Abrams' mystery boxes and poops inside of them. Rey's heritage? She's no one. Kylo's redemption? Nope, he's completely evil. Snoke's backstory? Doesn't matter. Why did Luke sequester himself? Shut up.

Finn and Rose have a random pointless adventure, Poe ruins everything (though to be fair, it's really Holdo's fault for having such a stupid plan), Leia has a terrible CGI Force-in-space scene then does nothing for the rest of the movie, etc.

I can imagine Rian Johnson taking JJ Abrams' mystery boxes and just not wanting to go in the obvious direction with all of them, wanting to put his own twist on them. And yeah, okay, this movie is probably a little smarter than the other Star Wars movies. But the result of his actions is that the series was left completely directionless. The only thing in this movie I actually thought was interesting was Rey's parents being unimportant nobodies, and we all know where that went.

This and Phantom Menace are the least important movies in the series. JJ Abrams just retcons or ignores everything in this movie, so the only events that matter are Rey gaining a psychic connection to Kylo and Luke dying. God, remember when Luke shows up in TRoS and immediately contradicts himself from TLJ, where he's like THIS LIGHTSABER IS THE MOST IMPORTANT OBJECT IN THE UNIVERSE BROOOOO.

I have no idea how Disney approved any of this. We all like to imagine there's an army of like guys in business suits in a boardroom trying to homogenize all movies for mass appeal, but then something like this slips through the cracks and you just end up wondering if Disney was just really, really, really lucky in the past.

I can't believe this even exists. No one cares about Jar-Jar's backstory. It's inconceivable that no one ever published a book about Jar-Jar dying, in fact. I'd seen this image of George R. Binks trying to kill himself before, but I'd always assumed it was a fan image of Jar-Jar. Oh well.

Mara Jade
Having only read the Thrawn trilogy, Mara Jade is great. She's like this torn-up Force user who doesn't want to be evil but has a brainwashing thing where she has to kill Luke. I realize that Mark Hamill is way too old to -- you know what, no, if you can CGI RDJ to look 40 forever in those MCU movies, you can do it for Mark Hamill in Star Wars. Let's all just agree the ST didn't happen, and we'll readapt the Thrawn books.

I'm gonna level with you, though. The thing I remember Mara Jade for the most is that she had the page quote for the infamous Breasts article, about feeding her son.

Clone Wars (Miniseries)
Goddammit, it's such a shame that season 5 of Samurai Jack couldn't stick the landing. The first three episodes are masterful, and then Aki shows up and everything goes to hell. I don't completely hate Aki, but she diverts crucial attention away from Jack's character arc.
