Why would you switch to an aggressive approach with the deer when the gentle one was working just fine? The death people were saying in spoilers was bullshit and hard to avoid was Matt's second death. If, as Matt, you continue to try and save Emily as the tower is collapsing, he'll land in a different part of the mine where he'll be immediately grabbed by a Wendigo. The only way to survive this attack is to have the flare gun AND have a shot left in it, meaning Matt and Emily's relationship has to be just high enough for Emily to give the gun to Matt, and just low enough that Matt doesn't fire off a distress signal like Emily wants.
