18 years old. Another birthday come and gone, as the rain pours down outside my bedroom, full of video games & action figures and dirty clothes. In one week, I'm heading off to college, to, as my older brother puts it, "get with the hottest chicks around and party all day". Pfft, the past four years... well, they've been a blur to say the least. I probably spent more time on that GameFAQs website then turning in my science homework, those horror rankings I would do in the autumn months consuming my life with fear & viscera. I guess that's all behind me now though. I won't have time for it this year, I'll be knocking back "brewskis with the bros" and working towards my future, whatever the hell that even looks like. Shit, it's my birthday, let's focus on something positive. I got a few gifts from mom & dad today, mostly college related and some used Xbox 360 games I already owned. My best friend who's STILL away on summer holiday, managed to send me Lollipop Chainsaw though, she's really the best! I wish she could've been here today. And then of course, there's the one from my big bro. Actually, I didn't even open his yet. Let's see. Sonic the Hedgehog on Genesis? I haven't played Sonic since he was a werewolf or some shit. Looks kind of weird though... a red cartridge? And what's that written on it? EXE? For extreme? Yeah... Sonic is still totally radical dude. Why would my brother send me this? I'm surprised he was able to get away from his beloved booze & marijuana long enough to even be coherent enough to wrap this for me. Do we even have a Genesis? I checked the hall closet, and lo and behold, we do. Huh, well maybe some nostalgia overdose is what I need right now. I used to watch my brother play this in the mornings before school, he was such an old-school type of gamer. Okay, let's plug this in and see how it goes.

Hm, I don't remember it starting up like this. Wait, was Sonic just bloody there?! Oh I get it, this must be one of those new ROMHACKS I'm always hearing about these days. As if my PC could even run Solitaire. Data select... Tails, Knuckles, Eggman. Typical modern Sonic game, have all his friends but forget what makes the series actually enjoyable. Okay I can only be Tails, whatever. Hill, act 1. This is actually kind of unsettling. Weird, backward sounding music, devoid of any challenge or enemies, what is this hellscape! Evil sonic...? Do I want to play?! I'm shutting this crap off. My brother is one messed up dude to send me like something like this. Wait, what the hell, I can't shut it off. I even unplugged it! Is that laughter I hear outside my door? Do I have to keep playing? Okay, be rational, it's probably just part of the hack. These are some neat repurposed levels anyway. Oh GOD evil Sonic is chasing me now! He made Tails cry. Why... do I feel like crying too? What is this game doing to me?! Knuckles now, oh I can jump off the side. Oh fuck, that just made evil Sonic angry and sent me to The Twilight Zone. I'm Knuckles, maybe I can punch him. AHHHHHHHH, what was that pain just shot up my arm? Is... my Genesis bleeding too? Something is compelling to keep pushing. Eggman. Just run to the god damn right, oh, please not again. AHHHHHHHHH, I just dropped my controller in complete agony, blood is pouring out of my Genesis, is my flesh falling off...?, is that Sonic in my room, MOM DAD HELP MEEEEEEEEEEEE

I awoke just a few minutes later. My arm was normal, no blood anywhere. A note was in place of my Genesis next to the cartridge. "Dear brother, I'm sorry I had to do this to you. Sonic.exe will never stop chasing you, but you can get away as long as you keep on the move. It was my price to pay for my demons, and I was too much of a coward to own up to them. I cursed you instead, and I don't expect you to ever forgive me. Well, at least now, your demons, your laziness and video game addiction, they won't be a problem now.

I slunk back, shocked at what I had just read. My own brother sold me out and ruined my life. Could I pass this on to someone else too? Would I want that on my conscience? I feel his presence already. No, I can't let him get me. Mom, dad, I'm sorry. I must go now. I guess I should bring the cartridge with me though.
