I first heard of this movie through RedLetterMedia's Best of the Worst, and me, surprised at the praise it was showered with, decided to give it a go of my own. And to my even further surprise, this film is actually good, great even! Directed by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro was an unashamed attempt at cashing in on the craze of Alien, at least aesthetically, but what starts off as a perceived rip-off eventually is actually a surrealist nightmare, a depraved world of body horror, killer toys, wild animals, and sexually-charged gratuity that any idea of this being a grubby money grab is all but shattered . As the film starts, main protagonist Sam, an all together typical father playing with his son, is abducted and returned three years later as an alien/human hybrid, who then goes off and impregnates a woman and dissolves, and THEN she gives birth to a fully grown Sam who goes off to try and find his son, Tony, again. Yeah, this film is bonkers from the start, and it only gets more insane from there. Sam does reunite with his family, with some surprisingly effective drama revolving around his ex-wife and a new boyfriend, but it's pretty clear why Sam is really there, when he is caught eating Tony's pet snake's eggs, and then chases him down to suck his blood, calling it "their little secret", which is pretty fucked up. Discussing some more highlights, Tony gains psychic powers from the alien, and brings some toys to life, including a wooden solider and a tank, and also manifests a real clown, and though these scenes feel somewhat inspired by Tourist Trap, they're more akin to the killer toy boom that would occur in the late 80s. In perhaps the most famous shot of the film, Tony's au pair is cocooned and impregnated with eggs, and the effects and lighting here are just totally bone-chilling. Xtro is unlike any film you have ever seen, and it really needs to be watched to appreciate the creativity here. It's certainly not a perfect movie, there are totally just scenes here that just drag on and some non-sequiturs are very likely to just turn must audience goers off, but, if you stick with it, I think you'll find a film that can be horrifically scary, and one that uses its lower budget to its advantage to craft a monster that earns memorable status. Or you could just watch the RLM review, that's good too!
