Kinda guess I mostly just binge shows now so I guess I probably have gaps in viewing as well. Not 10 months, but probably a few months (not counting something I might watch on YT)

Speaking of shows, finished The Good Place last night. Not sure how to feel about the show's ending, other than the fact that their version of the afterlife is somehow more bleak at the end of the series than it was at the beginning (although less torture-y).

I partly mention it because, afterward, I kinda recognized that the show is fantasy which I hadn't really thought much about while it was running. As a genre, I tend to associate a lot of things with scifi or horror because they're relatively fluid genres and scifi in particular has a long history being used to examine social issues. While fantasy can (and has) been used allegorically and metaphorically, I tend to associate it more with escapism. I guess the other element is the general handling of the material, where something like Riverworld or even What Dreams May Come had a more overtly fantastical element to its fantasy that gave them a sense of wonder which was largely absent from The Good Place (probably because of the comedic elements). That or maybe it's just the fact that the show references too much contemporary shit including a lot of virtue-signalling.

Oh, and it was kinda stupid that shortly after the show references the show Friends and mentions Phoebe by name, they later bring in a character played by the woman who was Phoebe on Friends. Kinda ruined that whole character for me, although I guess the fact that the character was being played by the actress who played Phoebe was going to kinda ruin the character regardless. Out of the cast, she and Matt LeBlanc always seemed like the least-talented actors (although Matt was great in Episodes, even if it felt like he was playing Charlie Sheen)
