As someone who lived in Charlottesville at the time, and followed both the lead-up and aftermath of the rally in extreme detail, I can assure that you're wrong.

There was never any doubt or confusion regarding the kind of people in attendance. Only those who were completely ignorant of the event are now coming out of the woodwork with their enlightened opinion how it was regular peaceful totally not white supremacist folks just protesting a statue removal. The advertisements, list of organizers and permit requestors made it clear that it wasn't a gathering organized by or for 'very fine people.'

Trump was clear. He downplayed the actions of the protestors (even though they caused the death of Heather Heyer and injured numbers more) while pointing his concern towards the dangerous actions of the "alt left" counter-protesting.

He initially did refuse to make any condemnation and did in fact refer to the group (which collectively marched under nazi, confederacy, and gadsden flags) as fine people. He later walked back his statements because it was getting so much negative press, but that doesn't undo what he said.
