I don't remember Koga's clan doing that, which I assume must have happened prior to her joining up with Sesshy... and, come to think of it, is that really spoiler-y? Or was it something only revealed far later into the series?.

I never finished IY, but I remember a lot of it so I don't think I'll be all that surprised. However, given that Kagome's ability to sense the jewel was one of the biggest reasons she's on the quest instead of handing the thing to somebody else, I'm a little surprised that a detail like that could be forgotten, especially since we can sometimes see her physically seeing the shards in demons' bodies.

And yeah, Rin was great, especially as an excuse for Sesshy to develop some emotion.
