Somebody made a vtuber topic a few months ago and then I got super dang into 'em like two days after that topic purged and now they have really taken off in popularity so let's have a topic about 'em

I was thinking about making some sorta beginners' guide or faq but maybe the boom has accelerated to the point where that's no longer necessary so I'll just do a couple quick points and if people want more then maybe I'll do a recommendation list or something

-It's somebody using facial/body mapping to move a 2d or 3d avatar of themselves, usually an anime girl, and....pretty much doing whatever a "normal" streamer would do. Most of them sing and play games and hang out and chat, some of them draw or do tutorials or ASMR or whatever else.

-There's kinda a difference between Western based ones and Eastern based ones, with a big potential for culture clash and misunderstandings. As I understand it, a lot of the English-speaking ones are just somebody you already know, using an avatar for reasons. A lot of the Japan-centric ones (including Hololive-EN) are more about playing a character, and it's not that far off from idol culture. It's extremely taboo to try to dig up information about the humans behind the characters, mostly because that usually leads to people facing doxxing and harassment and stalking and all that. Stuff like spamming and talking about other streamers is also less accepted than, like, Twitch.

-It's probably not as much of "a sex thing" as you think it is. Some vtubers are more fanservicey than others (and some fans are thirstier than others) but I think most of us are just there to chill.

-Most of the popular ones speak Japanese as a first language, but a lot of them speak at least a BIT of English, and a lot are working to improve that now that it's picking up momentum over here. And the most popular ones have lots of fans doing subtitled clips or even live in-chat translating. And there are some Western vtubers too. And Hololive (one of the biggest Japanese groups) just opened an English-speaking branch. (which stands a good chance of being what brought you here if you're reading this)

-Some folks give them money. Some folks give them A LOT of money. You don't have to, and it ain't onlyfans or something where you get a whole lot in return, but I think it's kinda nice to throw them a few bucks once in a while in exchange for the entertainment provided. Or you can go full simp, I don't care. Twitter might care though.

I have a feeling it will take me about two hours to regret having made this topic but until then let's be weebs
