Oh, side-thing -- I was looking at motte & bailey castles earlier (because Lok or somebody randomly brought them up) and it kinda got me to thinking: Aren't most castles (without that design) less secure for having a courtyard?

I know that there are practical benefits to having a courtyard, but they're less about structural defense than accommodating resources (or providing additional land, shelter, etc). It's generally easier to breach a courtyard wall since you just need to get over it compared to a structure that you can't just use a siege tower or ladder to get into. And once the enemy is in the courtyard, it seems like it'd be easier to breach the keep from there unless had a secondary redundancy akin to your outer defenses like a hill, moat, etc. (Something that the motte & bailey design intrinsically addresses since the keep is further up a hill.)
