I do find it interesting that this film is being attacked both from the Left and the Right, and completely justifiably so. That doesn't happen all that often.

So far that is my favorite scathing review, but I'm thinking of doing my own, tbh. Can't do it right away, though; I have to work a lot.

The original IS a women's empowerment story, as is the original ballad and its variations. Removing the struggle doesn't magically make it somehow more empowering, and blaming this on anything other than shitty writing inspired by vapid superhero movies is ridiculous. The new Mulan is outright regressive in its messaging.

it became more of an inner struggle than an outer one. it's more subtle, but it's there for sure. there's a lot of power in it, and a lot of women could benefit from this type of self-acceptance (my talented and smart gf, who suffers from self-confIdence issues in spite of being a Fulbright scholar and having had a 4.0 GPA, appreciates this). its a different type of growth that I think that many men cannot fully understand, as it simply isn't applicable to them.
