That's a much better usage. The US liberal/conservative thing is super arbitrary and confusing. Really, one of the worst things about the US political system is that it's imposed a left/right axis on our language to the extent that people have trouble even imagining a reality beyond that described by the axis.

Chomsky in Manufacturing Consent covers this very well. The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum

But to piggyback on an earlier discussion, this is the kind of reason that arguments like "her record is very progressive" or "voted with Bernie 93% of the time" do not hold weight with some people. Someone without conviction will always be easily compromised into betraying ideals in favor of the path the leads them to power, which is serving power.
